Traded my 90s Squier away for this 80s/90s MIJ Fernandes. My local pawnshop couldn't tell me much about it, other than the fact that it's pretty old, so I'm kind of in the dark. There's no specific model name on it. Anyone ever seen one?

I plugged it in for about 10 min, and it feels fantastic. I may have a suitable backup now.

The hardware is all Gotoh, and all matching as well, which is delightful.

I'm gonna get some new strings this weekend and do a setup. The neck needs a shim and the action needs a couple adjustments, but there's almost no fretwear, and no deadspots. It's short scale I think. It feels really comfortable to me. I opened it up to change the 9 volt and I found that the pickups are passive. For that reason, I may not switch them after all. (I despise actives, so I lucked out.)

I hate quilt/flame tops, but I looked past it for what the guitar is.

Only issues were a missing screw for the selector switch and the fact that the switch is bent a little, but oddly enough it's bent upwards. Maybe it was done on purpose? :?:

Anyhow, without further ado, here it is:

Don't know much about Fernandes but from their website it could be a Retrorocket model.

When you see a man with gold hardware you know you are about to get schooled.

Wat l0l.

I've been going through the catalogs, apparently mine is loaded with expensive parts.

Still haven't found this one in a catalog, gonna be a long night.

Couldn't resist tearing into it. Shimming it and giving it a setup as we speak.

The only Fernandez I ever had in my hands was very nice. It was a "50s vintage strat-type."

Found my answer:

The pawnshop's and my best guess was 80s/90s, but this one was a limited edition guitar made in 1999/2000 only I think, everywhere online says they were limited. I'm really unsure of the exact year, but that's when I'm guessing.

I found it in the 2000 Fernandes catalog. It is made in Japan, it's beautiful quality, I like it.

I'm going to take it in for a setup, then eventually gonna give it new wiring.

I shimmed the neck and oiled the fretboard. It'l be perfect when I get some new strings on it.

Not having new strings is absolutely killing me.

She's a beauty and if you ever tire of looking at that beautiful quilt maple top,I'll pay the postage or courier fees.Does she have the Sustainer system?Congrats on getting such a rare gem, that blueburst is just something else too-not hard to see that she's a limited edition, once you get new strings on her you'll really hear her sing.

BTW: with regard to not having spare strings on hand.Since I have chronic GAS and regularly make impulse guitar (and other gear) purchases,I long ago made sure that I always have at least a couple of sets of spare strings on hand so that when I bring home a new prize,I can immediately put on a new set of strings. I find that Strings and Beyond have great prices for buying strings in bulk and even though I live in Canada, buying string sets from them saves me bundles of money. 12 sets of Reverend Willie's Texas Lottery Strings cost me just over $60 delivered, when I bought them here they cost me over $8 a set.

Yea, it is a lovely axe. I'd change the body out before I'd sell it, the neck has me sold, even though it's wider and flatter than I'd like. You could have the body, however!

With the shim the action is dead on at 4/64ths at the 12th. :) The neck is surprisingly straight, even though it was in a pawnshop for well over a year. (I assume, last time I saw strings this ugly they were on the Guild when it was freshly picked, who knows how long those were on it) I don't know what size of allen key I'd need to adjust the truss rod, or remove the bridge. Maybe it's time to get a new multitool?

I can say with certainty that I don't plan on selling this one just yet. Seems to be a killer axe, even with the 4 dead strings that didn't snap on me during setup.

And I'm gonna see if I can swing a deal with my local store. EB .009s are $9 a set there. Maybe 5 sets for $40? They're always cutting me some kinda deal, even throwing me a free pack if I'm down on my luck.

I think I found another brand I really like, though. I just went there on a whim during a snow storm this past Tuesday and that's when I saw it. Coincidentally, I also got my 86 Peavey in a snow storm. Maybe it's luck, maybe it's coincidence, who knows?

My friend had a Fernandes Strat copy in the late 80s, not a bad guitar. Certainly on a par with the early Japanese Squiers of the time, I believe Mark Knopfler used one for a while. Not sure why the company drifted off into pointy headstock stupidity in later years!

I'm a big fan of MIJ instruments, as well. Two of my best basses were. A Kawai Alembic copy and Fender 50's reissue P-Bass. Really regret getting rid of either, but that is the stupidity of youth, I suppose. Speaking of MIJ, here's a website that might be of interest:

http://www.music-trade.co.jp/JVGuitarHome.html

Lots of cool $@!& (including Fernandes and Fender) there.
