Just like TGS my first thought was that it was almost a ringer for the Harmony Rocket but that's not surprising because back in the 60s and 70s MIJ guitars were patterned after popular MIA guitars even the ones that weren't really the most expensive top shelf models. You got an incredible deal because these Japanese models are becoming more and more desirable, valuable and collectable since people have been finding out that some of them are real well made tone monsters.

Just thought I'd show you guys the pickups in the Domino.

Image

As you can see they're quite beefy. A lot of winds on these pickups. They've got some weight to them. There's a plate that sits on top of the bobbin to give it the trapezoid look in the open cover.

Image

This is the bottom of them. I'm not sure what to make of the relationship of where the screws go or the depth of the magnet. Do the screws bottom out to the magnet? I'm not really sure. There's only so far I'll go with poking and prodding these things. The wires appear to be getting brittle. The ground wire broke off pretty easily from the bottom copper plate. A good sign that I should take it easy and be careful with them.

Image

Here's a comparison of the size compared to a normal sized single coil. Gives you an idea of what I'm looking at. You can also see the rosewood plate that props up the bridge pickup. It was looking a bit weathered and dry, so I gave it some Teak oil to give it some more protection and a nice rich color. You can also see an old piece of tape on the body. It reads "Position Of Bridge Base". The bridge is a removable one with felt on the bottom. So it's just telling me where to put it back when I restring.

Another thing to note is the Tortoise. It's thick and has a great 3D quality to it. Not like the newer stuff you see on average. I'm hoping I can eventually find the pickguard to this model. Especially after seeing the quality of the pickup rings and switch plate.

Anyway.. I'll have to clean and inspect the other pickups, then I'll get to the switches, pots and wiring. It's a fascinating experience so far. I think when you take on something like this and clean, restore, or modify, it helps you to appreciate the guitar more. I can tell when I'm done, it's going to be a fun guitar to have around.

Thanks for all of the info and input. It's very much appreciated.

Nice find. 8) That's the type of guitar I'd love to run through some nasty fuzz and tasty old school feedback until your neighbors come screaming with pitchforks and torches.

Yep compare those to a Teisco pickup. You'll see that the Domino pickups are much heavier.

Congrats, JS, you got a very cool guitar for the price of a pedal. :D

I see I'm going to have to start haunting pawn shops.

I've said it before. Las Vegas has the best Pawn Shops in the country. They're everywhere out here. There are some where you won't find the greatest deals because the people running them really do know about guitars. But then there are those where they know nothing about them.

In a case like this, I didn't even know what it was really. I just knew it was old and in descent shape. Seems to be the general rule around here that if they can't find one on eBay to figure out a pricing, they just slap $200 on it. If it doesn't sell for a while, the price drops.

The workers in most cases are no different than the sales people you would run across in any retail store. It's like the floor person at Target or Best Buy or Macys. No clue of musical gear.

I do realize that I have a different situation than most people. There are a lot if pawn shops with a lot of music gear up for grabs. When I visit other cities like LA or Hollywood etc., it's a much different situation. Out here, most of them are chain stores as opposed to mom and pop type businesses who do their research and know what they have and what it's worth.

Part of the reason Vegas has so many Pawn Shops is directly related to Gaming.

People pawn items to get a stake to gamble with. When the House Wins (as the House always does eventually) people don't/can't reclaim their goods.

Alternately, when people take their earnings to gamble with and lose, they pawn items to get the Rent/Mortgage Payment.

cheers!

Good observation JS. The Chicagoland area has a few large chains but many many more owner operated and in some an owner has 2 or more. Take a vacation, come to Lollapallooza for that three or four days, map out your pawn shops and take them all lol.
