Hello everyone;

Looking for advise on what steps or precautions one should take with the neck before undertaking a repair project in which the guitar will be unstrung for a long period of time?

i.e. loosening the truss rod? How much??

'83 Strat Elite

Thanks!!!

There are differing schools of thought about that. Many people express a great deal of concern. I bought neck on eBay from "The Stratosphere". I have no idea how long it had been since it was under string tension when I got it but I had it sitting around for a couple of months before I used it and it only took a couple of hours to settle in once I installed it and strung it up. I didn't touch the truss rod at all and it's fine.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

With the truss rod fully released and no string tension, it's just a piece of wood. Sure, it can still expand and contract a little with changes in humidity and temperature but it's not going to suddenly twist into a corkscrew and snap like a dry twig. Just retension the neck when you put strings on and adjust the truss rod as normal to set the relief.
