This is somewhat of a business question. One of the Baltimore area stores has a huge selection of guitars on display and in basement storage. Many of the unsold guitars have been there for several years. They still have the asking price at generally full "street" price comparable to other retailers.

The question is, how many folks negotiate discounts in this situation? Significant? I would think the carrying costs (tied up capital) would make them want to sell sooner rather than later. I've seen Telecasters that were 6 years old with the original tags and Gisons that were the latest model.
Thanks!

i have seen this type of thing before, generally they are sitting there unsold due to the uncompromising nature of the store owner. Meaning there have probably been many suitors that have gone in to haggle due to the merchandise sitting and the store owner basically say NO. Thus the guitar continues to sit unplayed. Again, i could be wrong but generally that is my theory.

Sounds like Bill's Music House they have a large collection of guitars stored. One of the best stores around.

We have that around here. There is a shop. Which I love because they treat me well, but they do have some questionable practices in this regard. They have a brand new 2008 American Standard Precision on the wall for it's original street price. Now, to be fair. That is considerably lower than a new 2014 American Standard. However, it's still there because it's heavy as hell and the frets need dressing really, really badly. It's boat anchor and the neck plays like crap. You'd think they'd drop the price or toss in the fret dressing to get it out the door to someone. Nope. It sits there. And will for a looooooooonnnngggg time. Likely until some poor kid comes in thinking he is getting a good deal.

Does not compute.

What does not compute? It's unsold. Or maybe you'd prefer "New Old Stock".

If there's fret wear to the point that it needs dressing "really, really badly", it's not new. Neither "brand new" nor "new old stock". The condition is then used, whether it has been sold or not.

Correct. I bought a Nashville Tele there that, at the time, I had no idea that is was 6 years old. Sounds and plays great.

What do you think of the techs there? I have had mixed results.

No, you're wrong. I didn't say fret wear. (which means it would need a RE-FRET) I said it needs fret dressing. Which is the filing down of the ends of frets to make them smooth and flush with the edge of the fretboard. It's a finishing technique. Not a repair, or maintenance. You just don't understand what the terms mean.

Be careful about throwing rocks when you live in a glass house.

Fret dressing to me and most everybody else means filing them down so they're even. You can dress them a couple of times before you need a re-fret.

Yes, clearly I am the one who "just don't understand what the terms mean". :D

+1

I've been to stores like that countless times. Many have now shuttered their doors due to lack of customer traffic.

This is another reason I don't like to deal with local music stores. Technically, any guitar you get out of the box isn't brand new. It's been played on and who knows what else done with it, and they charge full price. I'd rather order from a reputable website like AMS, straight from the warehouse with a return guarantee, and still in the box. Plus the fact (at least with them) they have excellent customer service, which often can sadly lack locally. As long as the quality control from the factory is good, I can deal with any minor adjustments. If it's total crap, then I can return it for either a full refund, or another model at no cost to me and no bull.

If you have a local place that treats you good, and aren't shysters, then count yourself lucky.

Well, well, well...I must be the lucky one in this bunch. I bought my CAR 60's Classic Series Stratocaster that was an '07 model in 2012 and in was in brand new condition (no wear what so ever) and I paid only $475, that is darn near used prices.

My local Mom & Pop treat me quite well! If I see something and it is more than a couple years old, I always ask for a discount and they have always accommodated me.

Sorry to hear so many others have had some issues.

My local Mom and Pop store had a "Brand new unsold " Aerodyne Strat in their shop for every bit of 4 years and possible 5 or 6 until it was finally sold for a price that I'm not sure of but when I tried it out one day while on a Strat hunt, they wanted the same price they had originally put on the hang tags some 4 years or so earlier. In the meantime though, they have always given me good deals as I have been dealing with them since they opened and I have sent a lot of business their way.
