I imagine metal.

Judging by the fret and fretboard wear, I disagree. You'd see a lot more wear on the bass side if that were the case. What I see is lots of wear on the treble side, with the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 12th and 14th frets being hit the hardest, and really bad fret grooves implying few if any bends.
My guess it was used with a slide, for country.

Whatever it was used for, it's almost a work of art. I'd love to see it cleaned up and put back together.

This time, Buxom, I have to agree with you. A Prison Strat might be an interesting addition to the collection... and a MIJ to boot!

The price is right!

Too much bad karma attached to that guitar.

For the right price, I'd have someone pay me to take it off their hands. Good 'ol Ebay at its finest!

I'm surprised they would let prisoners have a guitar with steel strings!

Not all correctional facilities are for violent criminals. Someone who has committed a white collar crime is likely considered to not be a threat to others.

That guitar is AWESOME!! I don't see it as bad Karma at all.

To someone in that prison, or a few, that guitar was worth it's weight in gold. You can only imagine the escape from reality it provided. If you could imagine yourself in that kind of situation (nevermind how you got there), being locked up for 23 hours a day dealing with the day to day mind freak of prison for years and have what? 30-minutes a day? A week maybe? A month? If I was ( for whatever reason) in a prison, and there was a guitar in there, I'd be Salivating to play that thing as much as possible.

You KNOW it was used as a good behavior tool. And on the flip side, can you imagine what happened to the first person who put a ding in that thing? Probably got shanked in the yard for it. I mean, look at all that wear on the neck, and there's like one ding below the jack. Typical scratches are one thing, but a ding could cost you a kidney.

Very interesting guitar to say the least. The guitar itself just makes my imagination wander into so many different questions and scenarios. Who was playing it? What were they playing? What rules were attached? Did anyone lose a spleen over it? Were the old strings smuggled out for tattoo needles? Was it used for good behavior leverage? Did it change someone's life forever?

Great conversation piece, work of art in its own weird way, insanely interesting. I think it would be a nice project.
