Caveat Emptor s/b the mantra of anyone looking to buy a Fender...

Take for example this listing on eBay for a Fender Empress Telecaster - Honeyburst.

The Seller, a Texas Pawnshop, has an opening bid of $1,000.

Problem is... this is NOT a Telebration Empress Telecaster.

It is a 2010 Standard MIM Telecaster w/ 60th Anniversary Commemorative Neckplate worth $400 tops, esp. given it's condition !

The Telltales are:

No 'Made in USA' on the front label (says 'Made in Mexico' on the back)

S/b a 22 Fret neck, this one is 21.

String Tree is incorrect

S/b 3-saddle Vintage Bridge, this one is modern 6-saddle Bridge

S/b Empress wood Body, this one is Alder

S/b SKB 'Fender' Hardcase, not Tolex case.

Compare it w/ this genuine Fender Empress Telecaster - Honeyburst and note the differences.

The price for the genuine one is much lower also (too low in fact - but 3 days left and reserve not met).

This is such an obvious case of mis-identification, that one wonders whether this is a case of ignorance or malfeasance. Perhaps the Pawnbroker mis-identified it when making the loan on it. Perhaps the Seller fooled the Pawnbroker into making a bigger loan than they should. If so, is the Pawnbroker trying to recoup it's losses or is it an honest mistake... that they genuinely do not know that this guitar has been misrepresented?

I've written the Pawnbroker alerting them to the error of their listing, incl. price. Let's see if they remove/correct the listing.

But... BE CAREFUL OUT THERE !!

cheers!

That's why every listing has a "report item" link. Tell ebay it's not an accurate listing and maybe, just maybe they might remove it. Doubtful though.

Nope... Incorrect or innacurate Item Listing is not a reason eBay allows for reporting an item.

Item report refers to Trademark/copywrite infringement, obscenity or intellectual property.

It appears one could sell a Mouse mis-labeled as a Moose...

cheers!

Remember what's commonly known as Hanlon's Razor:
Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately described by stupidity.

Hanlon's Razor, huh? That really cuts to the chase. Might have to introduce that one into my day to day vocabulary... Thanks!

Malfeasance...if they don't change the ad. You almost wonder if they posted the wrong pics, those guitars are not even close other than they are both Telecasters!

I'm going with malfeasance. They are just a pawn shop and for them to even know of an empress tele they had to do some research and have to know the difference. That guitar is not even close. Not many pawn shops lose out when buying something. They know what they have

wanna risk getting ripped off? buy from a pawnshop
wanna risk getting ripped off BAD ? buy from e-bay

I stopped buying from pawnshops when an owner I used to repair firearms for (I was a pro gunsmith) bragged to me that as a general rule he wouldn't TOUCH an item unless he could AT LEAST triple his money on it.

some folks swear by them
some swear at them

I leave them alone

I sold an old stereo receiver to a pawn shop 4 or 5 years ago. It was something I was never going to use, and I got a quick 20 bucks for it. That's the last time I ever set foot in one. It's just depressing seeing the shelves lined with things that people once cherished, but were forced to sell for quick buck just to make ends meet, and knowing they were ripped off in the process.

(And it's pretty much the last place I'd ever buy a gun from.)

I contacted this seller and tried to explain that this is not a empress telecaster. I suggested that they contact Fender with the serial number. They said they did and were told that it was indeed a empress tele and that I should stop harassing them (one email) or they would report me to ebay. I then responded that not only do I demand they do so, I dare them to do so. The ad is no longer running.

Yes, it is. But they've changed the title to "Fender Telecaster - Copper Metallic Burst made March 2011" and the minimum bid price to $500.

Still way overpriced, given that the new price today at stores like Guitar Center and Sweetwater for a Mexican Standard Tele is $499.99

I contacted them yesterday... twice... !!

Here's their 1st response:

Dear XXXXXXXXX,

Thank you so much for your vigilance. We will access the issue promptly. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

5 Hrs. later the listing was still standing... uncorrected. So I contacted them again and here's their 2nd response:

Dear XXXXX,

We are so sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. We are assessing the issue promptly and appreciate your vigilance.

The listing was still up and unchanged this morning... so I said f*ck it...

cheers!

You are correct, but you get that fake genuine Fender case with it!

the pawnbroker I mentioned before once had a Maverick by Mossberg 12 guage pump in his rack with a $215 tag on it......I asked him if he realized that the same shotgun BRAND NEW sold across the street at a major dept store for $195 every single day.
His reply? "yeah, I know, but this way if someone offers me $175 for it, we both feel good about the sale, and since i've only got $40 tied up in it, I come out REALLY good !
