Well, sorry Fender.
An MIM J BAss was a leading contender for me to get as a fretless bass--which I've been saving up for and looking for for over a year.
But...
I go check out a local music store with a sale on Saturday.
The only fretless basses there are real cheap ones with necks I don't like.
A salesman asks me if he can help-I said I came to check out fretless basses.
He says, let me check our computer & he finds out they have an Ibanez SR500F--in the back, so he goes to check.
They have one.
He brings it out, I go to try it out.

As soon as I start playing it I know this is the bass--this is mine. (As long as it isn't more than I'm able to spend.--it isn't.)
So I play it for a while and buy it.
I got a good price for it, based on what I've seen SR 500s go for.
I get a case to go with it, and leave the store real happy.
My search for a fretless bass is over.

I have been leaning towards a fretless J Bass (MIM) but wanted to try an Ibanez one first.
Well, all it took was asking.
I'm sure I'd be happy with a fretless J Bass--I liked them, but the SR500F was even better.
Here's a bad cellphone picture of it. (Yeah the cloth tag for the controls was still on it)

I'll get better ones later-

So maybe if I get a new fretted bass one day, I'll get the J Bass--I do really like them.

Dude, if you're happy, I'm happy.
So, the places the frets would have been are marked? What happens if one's finger placement is a little off? Does it not matter at lower clef? Sorry for dumb questions, I know nothing about this.
But, congrats, I always admired Rick Danko and his scroll topped fretless.

Well glad you'r happy.

Thanks.
I know this is a Fender board--but I appreciate the way this board tends to be fair to other brands, and doesn't just shoot them down.

I was leaning towards the J Bass--but it wasn't too be--this time.

There's always the future for a second Fender for me.

Yeah, that guy that posted the "I'm leaving" thread is gonna be in for a rude awakening when he joins Harmony Central or TDPRI. I got yelled at for sticking up for Clapton on the Strat-Talk forum. Clapton! He practically invented the thing.

Congrats Z! I see alot of Ibanez basses in bands on the circuit now. Have fun and make music!

I had an Ibanez Sound Gear bass for a while in the early 80's in a PJ configuration. The neck was absolutely amazing. The weight and balance was good. Hardware was good. Fit and finish were top notch. The pickups on mine were a mixed bag. They were very hot. Very hot. They also had a real heavy push in the lower mids and a slight scoop in the upper mids. They were perfect for overdriven bass tones with a heavy sound. I was into that sound at the time so it was a perfect fit back then. I kinda grew out of that phase and fell in love (again) with the crisp spank and definition of the Fender Jazz but at the time you couldn't have pried that Ibanez out of my hands with a crowbar.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Nice bass. 8) I've found that the Ibanez basses have nice necks on them. My main bass is a Schecter Diamond-J Bass (that has a really nice neck,) but I also have an old Ibanez CT series bass, which I think they only made for a year and I use to have a TR-50 bass in the 90's, which was sort of like a P-Bass copy that had a more curved headstock. It was only $200 at the time, but it was a tight bass with nice action and decent tone. Sometimes you get lucky and you can get a good find without spending a lot of cash.

Thanks everybody.

I love the necks on J Basses, and I love the necks on SDGR's--I'm sure the J Bass neck had a hand in the design of the SDGR necks.

Like I said--if I do ever get a second fretted bass, a J Bass of some sort will definitely be on the short list.

Congrats on the Fretless. When ya' find a bass that talk's to ya', you did the right thing. Not every Axe is a Fender either. I've got a Gibson in my Fender woodpile myself.

I don't think that when Rob closed the thread, it was meant as an invitation to bring it up in other threads.

As for Clapton, Strats had been out for fifteen years and the CBS era had already arrived before Clapton even played them, so I think it's fair to say he did not practically invent the thing.

There's only one complaint (nothing serious, though) I have about Ibanez basses: I wish they had more color options on most of their models (like this fretless) besides wood finishes (red would be nice.) Is that a recent trend lately with basses? I've noticed a lot of that. I know they have orange, green, and other colours on a couple of models, at least. It would be cool if you could get more of that, I think.

I love to see the wood on a guitar or bass.
And I love the look of my bass.
Some of the cheaper models have a solid-colour finish.
Some of the higher numbered models are the same except for woods (Until you get to the premium & prestige models)
So there are some different looks.

But then we all have different tastes--and I'm glad our guitars & basses don't all look the same.

(Now having said that, I really like Burgundy Mist on Fenders.)

But whatever colour or woodgrain you have, it's more important how they feel, play & sound.
But given two or more basses or guitars that are otherwise equal (including price)--we would each tend to pick the one we like the look of better.
We even do that when the price isn't equal.

I don't hate wood finishes at all (some are quite nice,) but I'm just more keen on different colors. I also like the combination of wood grain and color, like a stain (like blues or reds.) I use to have an Aria Pro bass like that that was red stained.

Yes, that is true. The feel and sound are the most important thing. You can have the best looking instrument there is, but if you can't play it or it sounds like arse, then it's quite useless, I think.
