Do you prefer to buy pedals used or new. Why?

I'd prefer to buy them used for the main reason of it being cheaper and being able to get discontinued stuff. Also I don't care for the box or other papers.

So far I got my Ibanez FZ-7 fuzz($39), BOSS DS-1($39), MXR Fullbore metal($49), MXR Black label chorus($49) and Visual Sound H20($90).
I also got a DOD grunge off my cousin and A Digitech RP-80 off a buddy cant remember how much they were tho.

New, because they come with a one-year warranty for something that I stomp on. 8) However, I did once swap pedals, and the pedal is still rolling more than 3 years later.

But since I bought my SCX2 and installed Fuse, I have all the virtual pedals I could ever dream of.

New, because with used pedals, the former owner either stomped on them with shoes, in which case they'll be all scratched up, or didn't use shoes, in which case ... eeew!

Seriously, I operate my pedals with my hands, not my feet. So I prefer that they are good looking and clean.

It really doesn't matter much to me,I buy a pedal almost solely based on how good it sounds but having said that,if I can get a really good used flanger for less than 1/2 the price of a new one of the same model,I will buy the used one.I have picked up some great buys in used pedals such as a near new 1969 Big Muff Pi for $15 and a near new E-H Frequency Analyzer for $10 and $15 for a lightly used E-H Bad Stone phase shifter.I picked up a lot of great used pedals back in "the Dark Ages" for little or nothing.Even these days I have gotten some great deals in used pedals such as a brand new TC Electronics NOVAModulator for just $130-the guy who owned it had bought it 2 years before and used it about 6 times and figured that it wasn't the type of pedal that suited his musical tastes and style of playing-lucky for me,it was right up my alley. What it all boils down to is the sound that I'm after,if a pedal with features that I really like comes out and no other pedals have that going for them,I will buy the new pedal for sure.

i prefer new but if the savings are there then i snap up used pedals. As with most things, i try to get items gently used because the drop off in market value the moment something is purchased it tremendous (obviously not all things but most). So buying a used guitar or pedal just makes financial sense if you know what to look for and everything checks out. But new sure is awesome!

I buy both ways depending on how cheaply and easily I can get something I want. Lately, I've been buying new because Electro-Harmonix is turning out some great new pedals at incredibly low prices.

Unfortunately, now there are waiting lists for some of the best of the new pedals. I've had enough of waiting for gear. I had to put my name on a waiting list for my Bass VI --it took 4 months and 4 days to arrive. Already I'm on one pedal list and I'll probably add an order to another this morning. My GAS is really acting up again.

I love a great deal on a gently-used item I really want. But I only buy very gently near new used items that are significantly lower priced than new. Easy to do in the musical gear arena because people have such GAS and run out and spend their paycheck just to end up selling it barely used 3 months later at half the price so they can buy something else!

The trend on Craigslist is often to ask 80+% of retail for used gear... but those items rarely actually sell. I look for like-new at 50% of retail or I buy new.

all of what I got used was gently-used and for around 50% of then price. Out of the 2 pawn shops and few music stores that carry used gear I can usually find what I want used. And I can always try them before buying. Also if I decide to sell any of them which I usually don't lol I wont loose much money if any.

I prefer to buy new pedals unless they are some kind of rare pedal that is no longer made new and then I would have to test it first. In my view, used pedals are always an iffy proposition because you never know how they've been treated and you also don't know if there was a problem with it and maybe they jury-rigged just enough it to prop it up long enough to unload it and now it's ready to die. That exact thing happened to me about 13 or 14 years ago. I bought a used Danelectro pedal that died a couple weeks after I bought it. I opened it up and found 5 pieces of those styrofoam packing peanuts inside, wedged into places to force broken connections to stay in contact. I was never able to reposition the foam bits and close it up so that it would work again. I tried remelting some of the connections but my iron was too hot for that kind of fine work. I didn't know what I was doing anyway. I was just guessing. Ended up tossing it in the trash and bought the same pedal brand new. It lasted about a year and then died so I stopped buying Danelectro pedals.

I would trust a used Fulltone pedal. They're built like tanks.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I'm fine with either.
My last pedal purchase was two used pedals for about 1/3 of their combined cost new.
So I couldn't resist.
They were Danos.
they aren't heavy duty or anything, but I don't gig
They work well, and have been fun to play with.

The last pedal I bought before those was a Boss AW-3 which I also got used for about 1/3 of the new cost.

I've received pedals as gifts, I've bought new, I've bought used, and I won a couple.
I'm fine with all of those options.

Ive got both. I just picked up 3 new pedals recently. I once bought a used Dan-Echo pedal and it worked fine, then one day crapped out. Its really a gamble with almost anything used.
