Tone you can work with, change a speaker, adjust the bias, try different tubes, but when an amp spends a lot of time in the shop, it has to go. I work with a lot of musicians who had similar issues at the time. I sat in with my friends band and used his HRdlx and it took a dump near the end of the set and got some of the nasty distortion. He's a keyboard guy who doubles on rhythm guitar. It was a bad solder joint on one of the power tube sockets, a real common problem with the II series.

I have no problem with modern amps, just unreliable amps in general no matter who makes them.

Hmmm, our guitarist never had a problem with the drive channel on his. He got really killer driven tone. I wonder if it's something that was common to the entire series, or certain models? There's a local club we gig at regularly that has a weekly open mic, and also an open jam. The house amp is a Hot Rod Deluxe. The 212 configuration, I believe. It gets constant use, and I've never heard anyone, or the owner complain about it in the last 3 years we've gigged there. I've also heard people we've had open for us use it and it sounded great.

Add the users as foes in your user control panel and you won't see their posts, problem solved.

Personally I only really post in the Fender Lounge area of the site. I find the product forums tend to be full of people with 1 post asking how much their guitar is worth on ebay. Then they leave without replying to their own thread. So I just avoid the parts of the forum that I know will annoy me.

Don't think the HRdlx comes in a 212. We all percieve tone differently. I thought my HRdlx sounded okay, not great, not horrible, but i came from a time of Blackface and Silverface Fender amps that were rock solid in both tone and reliability. The DeVille pushes 60 watts the Deluxe is 40. Believe me, I had high hopes for this amp. I think Arjay even owned one at one point way back. Mine only lasted three months of moderate gigging. If you ever looked at the insides of a II series and saw how cheap the board is, you wouldn't be surprised by the reliability issues, they were mostly heat related issues. They improved it on the III series and it seems to have helped. Like I said, I build my own amps and most of my pedals now and will probably do so from now on.

Not that I'm bothered that much by some of the rude comments, but often times they are much more than putting down the gear, and yes many have definitely been personal insults, name calling, and put downs of the owners, no question about it. Adding some denial, or disclaimer after an insult doesn't change the facts at all. Selective memory might help the ones hurling insults, but does nothing for those on the receiving end.

I don't believe anyone called the OP anything. I know I didn't call him anything.
I'll have to go back and take a look, but I do know the term "tone snob" has been tossed about by this threads OP because some of us don't care for the HRD series. I prefer the term "cork sniffer" instead.

I have about 70 people on my ignore list. A couple are even in this thread. I'm probably on more people's lists than I have on my own. Such is life in Internet forums.

Okay, just went back to that thread and he wasn't called any names. As a matter of fact, he was the one who got a bit confrontational and started the name calling and he wasn't even the OP of that thread! Jeez  I know none of us would do such a horrible thing.

I can't see the point in arguing about something with someone I don't know. Better to just agree to disagree and move on, leave that board and move to the next. Be cool.

Nor are you on mine.

I know that I can be confrontational at times. I work to control it. Sometimes I am successful, sometimes not. I have even apologized to some people. Others, no way. I have even quit a couple of times only to come back because I miss some people and posts. There are several threads I read but will not post in or post only rarely. Modern Amps is my favorite thread. I have had some quibbles with KC9SYJ (he disagrees with modding amps), but I don't think we have ever had any real quarrels. If he decides to leave, that's his choice.

You know, sometimes I wish I was a "tone snob" and not have wasted money by buying cheap guitars that wind up being lemons when I should have just been patient and got a decent one. Lesson learned, there. Sometimes you get lucky and get a good one, but it's a crap shoot. I think I'm worth more than that, and why should I be stuck with something I have to struggle with (poor construction, neck issues, etc.) Besides, the significant other who is also a musician I play with, put her foot down after that episode with the Squier Bass VI, and said no more. It was a bad habit I picked up and was stubborn about it.

I suppose if you've had a consistent reliability issue with the Hot Rod Series, I can understand why you wouldn't care for them. It is based on factual information dealing with your experience and not just saying something sucks because you don't like the name on it, or isn't some custom shop $3000 special. To me, that's not snobbery, that's saying "hey there is a problem with this and here's why." I don't know the extent of the whole conversation that occurred, but I know people can be defensive when they feel like something that they like doesn't appeal to someone else and they feel they are being attacked personally.

I am curious though, since I haven't done any research about them, is this a wide and consistent problem with the series? I actually considered them as an alternative, or back up amp to my '82 Super Champ, but I'd be a little afraid to plunk down cash on something that's going crap out on me in a week. Things like this is the reason I joined the forum to begin with. When I purchased my Rumble 350 combo, I researched and debated it for almost a year (looking at reviews, and seeing about any issues with reliability, etc.) before I took the plunge. Luckily, it has serviced me well, so far.

Don't sweat it Bill...you and I have not always agreed, but I have always learned something along the way, and that is really the point of this place.

The whole issue of anyone being able to be cyber bullied just shows how weak and needy people have become (Not directed to OP)! If you don't like what someone says, just move on, get some thicker skin or stay off line if you can't take a bit of a poke in the eye now and then.

I owned a Pro Jr. and while it was not a gigging amp, it was my grab and go for jams and saw many hours of action, and it never had a single issue...meanwhile my nephew and several others I know who had HRD's had so many issues, they got rid of them. Too bad as none of them were tone related, they were reliability issues.

Well you're both on mine.
I had to click "show post" to see what you were talking about.

Without going into a lot of details,my main reason for having to leave and say "good bye" is that I can no longer put up with the "tone snobbery" that takes place on the "Modern Amplifiers" board, and the slamming of modern amps,...especially the Hot Rod series of amps,...by two members in particular,...I won't mention any names,...they know who they are. I
don't want any hard feelings,...but I am 'done' with the tone snobbery on that board,...I have had enough!

I'm sorry, and I agree 100%. What's going on here is not cool. It's classic internet bullying, and precisely the reason why I don't spend more time on this site.

The Modern Amps forum should not be for haters, it should be for fans of modern Fender amps.
