A couple of weeks ago while I was at the NAMM show Scotty was in Memphis to do an interview for Pete Pritchard's good friend at the BBC. A wicked (ways) cool session ensued (pardon my proper Bostonian). You probably have seen some of the pix if you're a facebook friend on any of the participants but they've been cool enough to let me me collect and present a few here for posterity along with some of their back story and commentary. Check it out at (and share it) at
http://scottymoore.net/sunbbc2014.html

Thanks,
Jim

Ditto! Scotty's got quite a legacy in the business. Some of your writing leaves the reader with the sense that he's a tad bummed out from all this notoriety. Would he truly prefer to fade out into obscurity?

As a followup to Friday's addition about the BBC interview at Sun, Geoff sent me a few more pix and Pete expanded more on the guitar he had given Scotty who returned it last month. I appended that section so check it out first and then scroll up to revisit the original page

Thanks,

I wouldn't be surprised if he would.

That photo of the Million Dollar Quartet always brings to mind Presley's 'lady friend of the hour', whose image was forever cropped from that shot, and what she thought about that.

I don't think she thought about it too much, at least not negatively. She wasn't really a fan but has surfaced in the last few years. Your right though, she had been all but edited out of the story and people later referred to her as a mystery though at the time she got a bit of recognition in the press.

Any interest in a followup story like 'what ever happened to Elvis' girl on the piano?"

Nicely done. Saw the show several years ago. Those four guys were influences of mine in my 'teens back then, and I still have some of their original '45's in my closet somewhere. Presley became a bit lacklustre for me as his musical style changed, but the other three remained. Thanks.

BTW: Are the recordings of that evening accessible? I've a link to an extensive article on that event http://www.706unionavenue.nl/64258537 and noted that they recorded 'Blueberry Hill'. I have a personal interest in that song in that my uncle, Larry Stock, co-wrote it.

Many thanks. On review, I find interesting that the website lists 'Blueberry Hill' but I don't find it in the collections.

Johnson was quoted as writing
Quote:
... and then Elvis stopped by.
Elvis headed for the piano and started to Fats Domino it on "Blueberry Hill." The joint was really rocking before they got thru.
...
If Sam Phillips had been on his toes, he'd have turned the recorder on when that very unrehearsed but talented bunch got to cutting up on "Blueberry Hill"

It leads me to believe he was either unaware that they were actually recording, left before they started recording or chose not to mention it since it was in violation of Elvis' contract with RCA. Of course he may also have meant that Sam just didn't turn it on in time to get it. According to Sam and Jack Clement, whoever you want to believe, turning on the recorder was an afterthought and its likely that if that song was the start of the jam it may never have made it to tape.

Thanks for the clarification. What was of interest to myself and my distant cousins was the background on the song, and we appreciated having access to that. I know you are aware of the complications involved in gleaning these little tidbits, particularly when interested parties have lost contact with the sources or were distanced from each other in their lives. The noted record producer Jerry Wexler is also part of our family. He was my father's second cousin,[his grandmother being my grandmother's sister], but I never learned of this until several years ago. The reasons for this are complex and not necessary to this discussion.
