Just a general thread to see who has or is serving and to give thanks!

I'm somewhat considering going to West Point next year. I'm valedictorian of my class and I think I'm in good physical shape by participating in sports year round. I'm just not sure if I want to make that type of commitment though.

Not many get the opportunity to go to a great school like West Point. I would've jumped on it, had I had the opportunity. Great college education, it's free (well, almost.......you have to commit to a time of service after graduation), and what a great thing to put on a resume for a job afterwards.

Thanks to all that are/have served for our country. I'm still in school, but plan on going into the Air Force once I graduate.

USAF: 1978 to 1998; 4 years as a C-130 Mechanic; 16 years as a Vehicle Body Mechanic; Hickam AFB, HI. Hurlburt AFB, FL. Eglin ABF FL., Kefvlavic NAS, Iceland, Homestead AFB. FL. Eielson AFB. AK. Goodfellow AFB. TX. and FINALLY McChord AFB. WA.

I hope you realize you don't "Just GO" to a service acadamy; you have to be nominated by your Representative in Congress, or the President; the Presidential Nomination (as far as I know) requires that one of your parents be a holder of the Medal Of Honor and you be the first born.
In getting a nomination from your Representative you need to have loads of reccomendations from many high profile people in your community; have supported local causes and charities for years probably starting in JR High.
You also have to have a STELLAR school career and it sounds like you got that covered but you will probably compete via testing and your application...
I'm not really sure what all the requirements are any more; but any of the acadamies are going to be TOUGH and you will have one of the finest educations available in the world; so you're afraid of the commitment?
Think of the commitment you would be making to what ever source of funding you would use to go to a school of simular caliber (there isn't one) paying back all those student loans?
Some of the MOST BRILLIANT people around will be there; no one makes General/Admiral (so called "FLAG RANK) unless they have been through an acadamy.
If you got these prerequisites go for it; you'll never regret it later.
