I have two Guitar Centers near me. I've always gone to those stores because of the wide variety of things they have available to check out. I mostly make purchases of accessories, such as strings, guitar polish, maybe even up to a pedal. For the higher prices items, like guitars, amps, and such....I use Guitar Center to see the merchandise in person, hear it, then I usually go online and order from Musician's Friend (I also save on sales taxes by using Musician's Friends). I've heard people complain about bad luck with Musician's Friend, but my experience has been quite the opposite.

The other thing I've found about Guitar Center. The sales people there, have often given me bad information. More often, I'll get the exact opposite advice or information from two different sales persons. If I'm looking for some seriously good information, I'm near a couple of music stores, where they have luthiers with a work shop right there. That's where I go for the "real info". I've also had work done at those music stores and have been very pleased.

You do realize that Musician's Friend is owned by Guitar Center?

Yeah.....musician's friend is owned by Guitar Center, but when I order from them, it's just between me and my puter. I use them so get huge sales tax breaks on big purchases.

I called them once......all they are is telephone centers spread at different places around the country......their warehouse is somewhere central in the country, to be able to ship anywhere fast. Their headquarters are in Oregon. At least all this is what the girl on the phone told me.

Musician's Friend charges tax to California residents. They have a warehouse in Thousand Oaks.

I've been lucky so far......I've never been charged sales tax. And all my items have always come from somewhere around Kansas.

It depends on were you live if you pay tax. In Maryland you
have to pay six percent sales tax if the company you order from
has a location within the state.

mmmmmm........now I'm wondering. I live in California, make a lot of purchases from Musician's Friend, and have never been charged sales tax. A few months ago, I saved a lot on sales taxes when buying a guitar. The guitar was shipped from a location mid-country (took five days to get here). A friend of mine just purchased an amp from them about two weeks ago.......took about five days for it to get to him......and he wasn't charged sales taxes either.

Whatever........I'm not complaining if they don't tax me. Hopefully it will continue in the future.

i've never been to a GC :? and I did not know that MF owned them...so that's pretty cool! however, i've heard that the people there are pretty good and will ask you if you need help, but if not they'll just let you play....but maybe that's just a friendly Pennsylvanian thing!

That must be it. I frequent the local GC and have no complaints. Yet, anyway.

I only get to go to a Guitar Center when I get to Portland (OR).

I've bought a few things there, but I always knew what I wanted and what a good deal would be. So it was all pretty much no nonsense. And no problems.

The one in Tacoma is ok. The sales people don't know jack about the music that interests me but then being 51 I can just about gaurantee (SP?) I could care less about thier fav music either.
Things I expect a guitar sales rep to know:
What's available in what I'm shopping for.
What"s comming soon.
What's on hand.
What tab (no I can't read music) books are on hand that covers what I'm interested in.
What effects do (how to demonstrate with humility) and what I might be interested in to creat my own or dupe effects or tones.
What's in the used and acoustic section.
I expect them to be guitar players; remembering they are NOT there to impress the public with 4500 notes played in 1.375 seconds but to demostrate what a guitar sounds like to new players.
Yeah they should know songs EVERYONE can recognise for demonstration purposes.
I expect them to be respectful of all the customers giving reasonable time to all to check out a guitar at a reasonable volume, not to thrash and trash for a hour denying some one else the chance to hear the guitars they are checking out and driving me crazy.
Help me find the damn cord! Make sure the amp is plugged in and ON.
Guitar reps shouldn't have to be familiar with what ever you are into; just be able to find the effect or book/cd/dvd, guitar you're looking for.
So far I have had no major problems with GC employees and they usually got a hottie at the door to say good bye to you too!.

Yeah, I've used the 38th St. GC before. I didn't find them too knowledgeable about most things, but they did try to be helpful. I do like the hotties at the door though.
