Alrighty, not sure if this thread already exists. But, do you loathe or love the Guitar Center chain?
I personally can't stand them. I would't walk into another one of their stores voluntarily for the rest of my life and be quite happy.
Why?
1) The sales people. They are the most idiotic people I've ever encountered in a music store. And you have 5 dudes hounding you if you flip a price tag card over.
2) Noise. It's kinda hard to test out a guitar with AC/DC blasting to a level where you can't have a conversation with the person next to you without yelling. And forget it if there's three 13 yr old kids divebombing at full volume in the next row.
3) Quality. Seriously, most or even all the guitars they sell are most likely B-stock. Poorly set up, missing parts, even missing strings sometimes.

So, obviously I hate the Guitar Center chain, but what do you all think?

I agree you'll need to tune up and work on the set up, but personally I love Guitar Center for the massive selection and great discounts.

I don't hate it like some people do, but it's not my favourite store.

It's the closest, so I go there to check things out, but I don't buy from them unless I'm getting a good deal.

Living outside Rochester, NY spoils a guitar player- we have the world-famous House of Guitars.

I can't stand the place either. I went to the one in Springfield, MO and the employees were just DEPRESSING (every one of them too!! You'd think they'd be emo if you heard them ask if you needed any assistance). That and most of their customers brought their kids along with them which were LOUD and obnoxious.

Personally, I like the music store in the neighboring town next to me, my blood sugar dropped out and the employees were kind enough to help. That and to mention that their stock is more impressive than the GC's.

I like to go to GC to look at what is new or to check out older stuff. I don't buy from them though.

Maybe it's a rare thing, but the employees at my Guitar Center are very helpful.

There's one who I see every single time I'm there, and he knows what he's talking about. Of course, there's another there who took half an hour to find a ladder, and then knocked a Les Paul off of its stand while he was moving the ladder.

I have bought thing from them on the internet and once at a store
and I will never go to a store again. Sales people no nothing, in fact
I emailed them one time about a guitar on there used section in
there web page the item was a guitar for 800.00 they never answered
3days latter I called the store and was told it was gone so I then drove
20miles to the store and it was still there., needless to say I did not buy it
and will most not deal with there store again. I did send note to corporate with no responce as well. I would buy from there internet sales site though
but you will have to do your own set ups because I do not think they
check or do them before shipment. Also I have found that my local music
store will match most of there prices and I would rather keep it in the
neighborhood if possible. Bill's is a nice store to deal with and sell high
quilty stuff and has some top techs for setups infact they check
each guitar before they go out.

I have two Guitar Centers near me. I've always gone to those stores because of the wide variety of things they have available to check out. I mostly make purchases of accessories, such as strings, guitar polish, maybe even up to a pedal. For the higher prices items, like guitars, amps, and such....I use Guitar Center to see the merchandise in person, hear it, then I usually go online and order from Musician's Friend (I also save on sales taxes by using Musician's Friends). I've heard people complain about bad luck with Musician's Friend, but my experience has been quite the opposite.

The other thing I've found about Guitar Center. The sales people there, have often given me bad information. More often, I'll get the exact opposite advice or information from two different sales persons. If I'm looking for some seriously good information, I'm near a couple of music stores, where they have luthiers with a work shop right there. That's where I go for the "real info". I've also had work done at those music stores and have been very pleased.

I haven't been to them that many times but the few times I have, have been good.
It is pretty loud inside but still the same you can try all different types of guitars and see what different types feel like.
I mainly like to try out equipment, to see what I like and dislike, the employees seem to be good.... The prices at the one I have been to were very good too which was a plus.

Yep.......Musician's Friend IS owned by Guitar Center. I purchase that way, because California just loves taxing. If it's a big purchase, the sales tax can add up. And I want to give the government as little of my money as possible. Also....I don't like to buy off the rack. I prefer my item to be a virgin, from the factory. (The saving sales tax money is the best part, though)

We have a chain here in the UK called "Sound Control". I hate it. One opened up in my area and since the musicians who are willing to spend a lot on guitars, and know about it go to another store (the one that I swear by, www.theguitarstoreonline.com check it out), every high end guitar just sits there collecting dust. There are models that have been hanging for 3 years.

And the worst part is, most of the gear has been played 100+ by grubby fingers, so when you get it, you're effectively buying a second hand guitar. That's why I always go to a small store, one that knows what they're talking about.

I was in New York last month and I went to www.ludlowguitars.com and I was so much more impressed than another store called Sam Ash. Awful.
