I currently have a Fender Frontman 25R practice amp, and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe tube amp. Now I'm thinking of getting a solid state backup amp, sometime down the road.

I know better than ask for what people think of the sound of a particular amp, because each one of us has their own idea of what sounds good. I plan to hit a local Guitar Center to test out amps for sound, for what "sounds good" for me.

I've been hearing a lot about the new Line 6, Spider III 150W, 2x12 amp. Have any of you heard good or bad things about this amp? Have any of you actually tried it? Reliability, problems, etc?

Thanks

not to heavy in weigth compared with a tube amp. all important sounds and effects on board. the audience are not interessted if the sound comes from a digital amp or a tube amp.

I know you said you wanted an ss amp, but have you considered a small valve amp as a backup? Blackheart Little Giant, or even their little 1 watt head? Very portable and sounds great.

I'm actually looking for a larger amp. One in the size of 2x12 at about 100W. I already have the Fender Frontman 25R as a practice amp. I'm not sure yet, but I'm thinking of something large enough (as a backup) for possible use for about small club size. My main amp now is a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe tube amp.

If you're thinking small club you won't need 100W. 50W is plenty for most small/medium venues. Save yourself a few bucks and get something you'll be able to turn up past 4.

Something to think about......thanks.

I'm still in the very beginning stages of thinking about it. That's how I work. I usually let things simmer in my brain for a while......look at things for a few months in a music shop........then one day....I just get something.

That's the way to go. Too many of us simply give in to the sudden G.A.S. attack and buy on impulse. Me included.

I just checked it out on Musician's Friend. Looks interesting. I've seen the Roland amps in catalogs, and maybe because of it's unusual shape, always thought it was mainly a practice amp. But now that I've looked it up, it has a 12 " speaker. Same as my Hot Rod Deluxe.

It seems to have sparked an interest with lots of people. I keep hearing it mentioned on different posts. Can it put out the volume, like the Hot Rod Deluxe?

It does get pretty loud. I have a friend that gigs with the Cube 30 (he mics it). I don't think you have any problems doing small clubs with the Cube 60.

You really shouldn't be worrying about volume. Clapton gigs with a 40W amp. It's about tone. Get the amp that sounds best for your style. The day's of a wall of 100 watt marshalls is long gone. Mic a small amp with great tone and you're doing fine for any sized gig.

Great.....thanks for all these ideas. Like I've said before, I'm in the beginning stages of thinking about all this. Maybe I don't need the 2x12 types after all. My Hot Rod Deluxe does just fine....I've just been playing around (in my head) about getting something in solid state that is better than my Fender Frontman 25R.

I don't see rushing down, right now. and buying anything on impulse. I'll let all this slowly cook in my brain, then maybe one day surprise myself with something new.

My last guitar purchase was the same way....Started out as a small idea.......kept thinking about it......thought about it more, then after about six months, happened into some extra money, then bought it. (Now I'm all done buying guitars)

I really appreciate all the input. It has helped me a lot. It's made me think about this in a lot of different ways (I can now see that I'm a little bit away from making a decision and actually making the purchase). This might actually be a fun process, all the shopping and looking around.
