That's pretty funny. Good stuff!! Hopefully it inspires a good comeback in the future by Fender. Leave an empty display, you kinda asked for it.

They used the wrong Gibson guitar, one of these would have been more appropriate ...

... if they weren't all burned or bulldozed into landfill in embarrassment that is.

They got lucky, the headstock didn't snap off when he hung it up there.

Guess that's the kind of high school stuff Gibson staff has to resort to when bored, and not busy enough pushing product, to have their eyes on the prize.

Did anyone watch the whole video? First off the guy is a stand up comedian that did the Joke...and that was a GIBSON guy who came and took the guitar...not a Fender Employee, because that one guy looked like he was going to walk out with the guitar!

Not really funny...guy must be one helluva stand up comedian

Kinda surprises me to see the lack of sense of humor. Nothing wrong with a quick prank. Pretty harmless if you ask me.

But if we're being more analytical about it a few questions come to mind.

How could the guitar have made it into that guy's guitar case, and walked over to the Fender booth? That would kind of suggest that someone at Gibson was in on the prank. Either that, or they weren't watching, and he could have very well walked out with it himself.

Secondly, why was there an empty display in the front of the Fender booth? Pretty important selling spot isn't it? I'd think you'd want SOMETHING in there at all times right?

So who really dropped the ball here? Fender leaves a display empty in the front of the booth, Gibson puts one of their guitars in it for all who pass by to see their guitar instead. I think you could make a case that it was Fender who didn't have their eye on the prize in that video. Your product wasn't displayed in your booth, THEIRS WAS. And for how long? It seemed to be up there for a while. If Fender was really on the ball, the prank never happens.

It was a amusing.
It could have been staged.

Let's see what happens next.

I agree I hope the utter lack of sense of humor reflected isnt represented by the majority of Fender players.Good Lord.
Most of the musicians I know are pretty askew and can take kidding as well as dish it out.

I would honestly hope that the guys at Fender would find a creative way to nudge back a little with one of their own. There's nothing better than a little lighthearted prank or humorous act to have a little fun with the competition. It's not like Fender and Gibson don't corner a majority of the market anyway right? I mean come on. It's not like they're trying to get their businesses off the ground by being at NAMM. The fact that Fender had an empty display sitting around kinda tells you they weren't all that worried about it (or they were showing off or selling the guitar that was in it, there's no telling why it was empty).

Fender is using humor to sell the Vaporizer, it does show that they have a sense of humor. So they got caught off guard. Seems like a pretty easy prank they pulled off. Not a huge score for creativity, but it got pulled off and it's kinda funny.

I'd like to see if Fender can get creative and pull off one of their own at the next NAMM.

I agree completely. As long as pranks are harmless and not mean-spirited, I think pranks makes the world a better place. Thanks, unknown Gibsonite, well done, that man!

We used to do April Fools pranks at work every year -- all harmless stuff, and prepared after work on our own time. Examples included white tape hopscotch patterns on the floor (complete with rocks); memos on employees being requested to park with the tire air valves at the bottom, not the top; new floral design internal web pages; announcement of chia pet day; requirement to write your name on the bottom of all paper cups; a laminated sign explaining how to wash your feet in the bathroom sink; replacing the bell that sales rang whenever landing a contract with a kazoo, and many others. All in good fun, and harming nobody. Then the humorless MBAs killed the tradition.

I haven't got a problem with pranks at all, they are a good laugh. I just didn't think this one was very funny to be honest. Not like it really kicked up a fuss and the guy stood there the whole time was just trying too hard.

This circumstance brings to mind something which appears to be happening with one of my favorite music vendors, The Music Zoo, in Roslyn NY. I noted over the past few years that they appear to be leaning very heavily towards showing Gibson even though they remain a Fender Showcase Dealership. The last Fender Road Show there was in 2010 to the best of my memory. I inquired off the cuff and was told that they have to move a given percentage of Gibson product if they want to remain in good standing with the company. I assume the same goes for Fender. Hence, there is a serious competitive atmosphere in the absence of which such a prank might have been better received. Apparently there is enough difference of opinion amongst ourselves to question the wisdom of it at the outset.

Okay. SO here's the plan. In hopes that Fender will try to out do this next year. We mock up some Gibson display cases and sneak into NAMM. Then. Once the nice new Fenders are loaded. We roll them onto a truck and are out of there!
