There seems to be a gob of mention around here on distortion devices and death-metal and such. On the other tack, 'just sharing an oulde remembrance on the subject for comment.

'Had an acquaintance, a pro, escpecially jazz, big band, classical and studio. Really, really competent guitarist. He professes disdain and really 'hates' any distortion in guitar music, believing in either an unamplified box or an electric going straight into an amp.

It was his contention, "...the sound of a distorted guitar is completely untrue using junk pedals, like a woman with falsies, fake lashes, too much makeup and a girdle."

It still brings a smile when relating. Thoughts?

there is a time a place for both. alot of people use over done distortion to cover up there lack of ability. if that is the case i must agree. THe truely great played imo can plug into there tube amp and play all night. and this is coming from a guy who runs like 18 pedals on his board

I'm a sucker for the clean, but sometimes I get my old first amp out (a marshall mg100), dial up the gain and get lost in that true SOLID STATE TONE. Lol, okay it sounds like crap but I don't have any mega gain pedals!

I must agree. "scooping" the tone and running distortion that sounds like it must come from an atomic detonation is a very handy vehicle to hide lack of talent.
If it sounds like (insert your fav descriptor here) plain; then it dosn't matter when scooped and over driven; so buy that cheap thing and save money for gas.
We have all heard (no way to avoid it) "playing" (I'm sorry; they are "checking the action" on a guitar they are almost "ready to purchase") at the guitar stores; "chunka, chunka, chunka" ad nauseum. I can only guess the customer is wanting to impress any "real" players or people that might be looking for a guitarist to join a band and are hanging around music stores. That or they are checking the tone.... you know there is NO tone in an over driven note; can there be any tone in 1, 367 notes played in 2.5 seconds under such conditions?
I know I'm not good enough to be in a band; I play well enough; I just don't know the songs most bands play and get stage fright anyway.
IMHO there's more soul in one note played clean or resonably over driven at the right time in the right song than any over effect-ed sound of any kind.
But that's just my HO. Everything here subjective and therefore is valid.
We all choose to listen to what we like. Ain't life grand?

nothing about different styles of music. Death Metal needs distortion and
most of the guys has good technic in playing.
Usually I agree...the true guys...guitar, cable, amp...it comes from the heart/head and fingers...they have tone.

true, but listen to the great players like james hhetfeild., marty friedman, and other great shredders and metal players, or even mark tremonte(chk spelling) and there is still a note under all the saturation. not just saturation. you still hear hettfeilds chords even when he is gained out and turned up to 11 lol
