What ever happened the the days were you could go to the local electronics store and buy tubes, resistors, speaker parts, radios.
Radio Shack announced they were closing 500 stores, at one time you could go to them in a pinch and buy electronics parts over the counter. They were a great source for short wave radio parts or even if you wanted to buy a high end radio.
Love internet sales but mis the walking thru a store looking for parts and trying radios out in person. I am in the market for another short wave and the net is were I have to shop and trust reviews on performance and such.

Those days you only have AM tubes radio and TV set with manufacturer using same parts . Easy for a store to keep parts people need . Not same today . Too much electronic stuff.

Oh man - I need a new stylus for my turntable.

(Yes, children, I'm talking about LPs. And that doesn't necessarily stand for Les Paul.)

Time was there was a street full of specialist hi-fi shops where I could wander in and have a quiet conversation with some nice fuddy-duddy guy and ask him if I really needed a like-for-like replacement for this amazingly expensive Ortofon cartridge, or if there wasn't some affordable little alternative that would do just as well. Nowadays I must shop online and if I need advice I have to log on to a forum somewhere full of people who either don't know what a pickup cartridge is or who snootily think my Project 6 is beneath contempt.

I miss the old days!

Sometimes. A bit...

Where's my walking stick?

Cheers - C

Radio Shack hasn't had anything to do with radios (or parts for radios) for decades.

All they sell now is phones, toys, and metal detectors.

If the entire franchise went titzup, I couldn't care less.

I'm fortunate I guess. There's a store I frequent in the city called Active Electronics that is way better than Radio Shack ever used to be. Way better, like by a factor of 10. They don't sell consumer retail items like stereos or phones or computers but if you want resistors or diodes or capacitors or Fluke meters or Hakko irons or scopes, PCBs, pots, whatever ... they have everything and they have it in price ranges from entry level to pro grade. I've never gone in there looking for something only to discover they didn't have it in stock. I'd bet there's something like that in your city or a city near you. The trick is finding it. Guitar and amp techs likely won't tell you where they get their stuff. IIRC, I'm pretty sure I found Active by Googling, "Electronic Testing Equipment Sales". I was looking for my Fluke meter and once inside I knew I was going to be a regular visitor.

They left there roots with the advent of cell phones. Should have kept the store count down and stayed in audio sales for audiophiles among us. We have become a electronics society of when it breaks buy another. I seldom see radios to be repaired any more and people don't no how good a tube radio sounds.

There are several Radio Shacks in the Chicagoland area. A good place to go in a pinch, the parts section has shrunk to a couple of small aisles though.

Have you ever checked out this website? http://www.radioshackcatalogs.com/ There's some blasts of the past in there. I know what you mean, though. $@!& sucks these days. I wasn't alive in the 60's, just a little kid in the 70's, but came of age in the 80's. Sometimes, I miss those days. I suppose people were saying that back then, too.

I've seen a few up and down the East Coast - but you have
to find them. In N Carolina there is a great store!

Exactly right. The trick is finding them.
They frequently hide in industrial parks.
Google is your friend when it comes to this sort of thing.

Thats how I found Angela's guitar parts back in a local industrial park but Radio parts for shortwave and vintage table tops are all net stuff now days.
Seems ebay people want unreasonable prices on many parts.
