I'd have let them play live. After such a long career of playing the one song over and over I doubt they'd have got it wrong.

Unfortunately, having a flawless show has become more important than playing music. The halftime show, the Grammys, it's all pre-taped so the music (ie, the show) is just right. I don't think most people even realize how much "live" music is canned, both live and on tv. Whenever you see someone singing and not missing a note or taking a loud breath while dancing, doing choreographed leaps, contorting their body, guess what? It's canned. No matter how talented, a person can't do all that stuff without even breathing heavily. So, the Chili Peppers played to tape. It's the way it goes. At least those guys are and always will be great musicians, who obviously have enough sense to laugh at what they were doing.
Not trying to be a bummer at all, but live music on tv is a thing of the past.

I don't think the fear is that they'd get it wrong, but that they'd do something unexpected, like seguing into a Neil Young or Pete Seeger protest song, piss off the religious right, or otherwise try to rock the establishment which NFL is very much a part of.

I like how a band will happily throw their artistic credibility on a bonfire when offered vast sums of money.

I'm sure they wept all the way to the bank. Maybe they met Bob Dylan there, depositing the cash from his recent commercial.

funny replies. I saw 5 seconds of Bruno and 1 second of the chilli's so couldn't really comment on performance. The game was brutal.

The question that should be asked is ...
Why is there a need for a hideously extravagant halftime ? Each and every Superbowl...
Are the Football teams that bad that they need an opening act, which these days seems to be the main reason a lot of people tune in .....

I usually tend to either go see a sporting event or a concert, not both at once....

Because in itself, it's just another American football game between two high-ranked teams. It only becomes the thing to watch because of hype. Extravaganza like the show and the ads are part of that hype, and necessary to maintain the illusion of something being special.

With such large audiences watching there really is no room for error, although it is pretty sad when you cant even play your own song live. it just goes to show where the music industry is these days. but honestly the whole thing was staged anyway, the people on the field were clearly actors. i think i saw David Hasselhoff in there somewhere

There might be something wrong with me but I F***ing Love the Peppers and not just cause people like Nick Cave hate them either. I actually enjoy their music immensely.

This song came on random the other night and I melted into my seat. The lead is so simple and beautiful. Exactly how I wish I could play guitar. Good thing it takes all kinds bro.

Even from Aus, I can see the Superbowl is more for the TV audience than the crowd. Most of whom are corporate types soaked in free alcohol and canapés, given most of the real fans can'r get access to or afford a ticket.

So it's a show for TV. The sound needs to be good to entertain all those with super dooper Home theatre set ups and 50 foot screens, watching at home. Bands offered mega bucks to perform are well aware of the conditions of sale. I don't think the RHCP have anything to prove, they're a known live act.
