If it were truly a "governmental guitar," it would be inefficiently built and of poorer quality than similar guitars...and cost twice as much! :P

When government does actual work, it's usually good. It's when they outsource the job to the lowest bidder that it becomes shoddy. And these days, that's 99% of what the government does.

Yeah, I've seen that guitar. I suppose their middle finger to the current administration. I wouldn't be surprised to find out the only reason they had a S.W.A.T. team kick down their door (after all guitar builders are armed to the teeth and jacked up on blow  ) instead of other companies was because the C.E.O. contributed to the Republican Party and they didn't like that too much. I serious doubt Gibson was the only company to source that type of wood. It sounded like a bunch of bull to me. At least they got everything straightened out.

When life gives you illegal timber, you put a clever spin on it and make a profit from it.

Government Series II Les Paul Great Gibson electric guitars have long been a means of fighting the establishment, so when the powers that be confiscated stocks of tonewoods from the Gibson factory in Nashville—only to return them once there was a resolution and the investigation ended—it was an event worth celebrating. Introducing the Government Series II Les Paul, a striking new guitar from Gibson USA for 2014 that suitably marks this infamous time in Gibson’s history.

I love it when huge corporations "fight the power man".

Considering that the wood was seized and then later returned to Gibson, it would appear that it was not 'illegal'. I think it's a pretty funny idea. As far as Gibson 'fighting the establishment', they are the establishment.

Given that Gibson paid $350,000 in fines for that timber I think we can safely class it as "illegal". Paying the fine doesn't mean the timber suddenly becomes legally obtained. The guitars made with it are a pathetic PR exercise. Surely a better fate for the timber would be to sell it at auction and specify that Gibson were prohibited from using it.

Here's an analogy:

You get a ticket for running a red light (while wearing your seatbelt). You go to court and plead 'not guilty'. They plea bargain it down to a 'seatbelt violation' which carries no points on your license. You take the deal.

Now here's the question: were you guilty of operating the car without wearing your seatbelt?

As far as the assumption of guilt, here's Henry's statement on the matter:

"We felt compelled to settle as the costs of proving our case at trial would have cost millions of dollars and taken a very long time to resolve,"

There is right and wrong. Legal and illegal are the concerns of people who long to be owned like cattle. Do not concern yourself with the whims of tyrants and cowards. Merely do what is right. Or don't. Just be willing to own it either way.

Well, they certainly bought it, so I guess they own it.

If it was illegal they would not have returned it. This is good marketing.

Some of the wood was indeed not returned. They acknowledged the illegality and forfeited the rights to $262,000 worth of wood, in addition to the fines. Note that these guitars have no Madagascar Ebony.
