I only used filler where the grain had torn, presumably why the body was a factory reject. There wasn't that much to do. I didn't use any grain filler, obviously as that would have filled that lovely grain.

The maple neck was originally chosen to go with the fabric wrap idea, however I am well aware of how good a rosewood neck looks with this light shade of blue. I usually prefer maple, but I might change for this guitar.

Ceri - The colour came from B&Q and is a satin hobby paint they sell to repaint your wooden furniture. They do loads of colours, gloss matt and satin, gold silver etc and lots of primers. I will probably keep using them when I do my next one, I'm impressed with the finish and ease of use. This blue was called 'December Solstice'. How do they come up with these names?

My next project will be a tele shape with a strat neck I suspect, although now I've got an SSS strat, a HH strat, an SS tele, an SH tele and a twin p90 tele, not sure what else to do........... I need to use this paint up!

A Les Paul neck tele, that would be cool 8)

Something like this

haha no thats too far

replacement pots being put in the post today by http://www.axetec.co.uk/. emailed them the problem earlier, took precisely 14 minutes to get a reply telling me I will be getting new pots sent out today ! great service

the total build cost, which includes absolutely everything needed was around 250 of her majestys finest pounds. here in the uk that's a little bit cheaper than the cheapest used MIM std strats I can find, but I know what id rather spend my money on.

I have a std MIM strat and all the hardware on my build is better, my pickups are almost certainly going to be better, and ive got a totally one off look. if im pleased with the Iron Gear pickups, they may end up finding their way into my other guitars. the aforementioned std strat is a little bland, and the bridge pup in my mim 72 custom tele is probably the worst pickup I own.

Very sharp looking guitar, I personally think maple necks and painted headstocks give guitars a great look.

Nice job.

Yes, very nice!

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Not feminine in the least. You're a helluva craftsman :-)

I love painted headstocks but have never had one, so I couldn't resist.

I Havnt got round to replacing the duff pots yet. So I've only tried the bridge pup so far. I sold an epiphone les Paul which this strat was to replace, but to be honest the sound so far is very very different. The ash body and choice of medium output humbuckers mean I don't have that big ballsy tone I had with the les Paul, which is a bit disappointing, but slightly expected.

However what I do have, judging from just the bridge pup, is this beautiful mellow but nicely defined sound which sounds like a really, really fat and warm single coil or p90. Add some gain and a bit of treble and it's a raspy little bas***d. Sounds like pure filth, really eager with none of the wallowy lows the les Paul had.

I'm on my phone so can't link too easy but YouTube for Andy fairweather low playing money with Roger waters on a black HH strat. That's the sort of sound I'm getting. And I love it.

As for a 'helluva craftsman' for a first go I'm well chuffed, but as with anything you build yourself, you know exactly where you could have done better. It's the same with my classic cars, I'm always getting hung up on the tiny little imperfections that 99% of people don't notice.

I might look into Fret filing, as the cheapo neck feels like it's never been introduced to one, and the neck pocket could do with being 2-3mm deeper aswell, the saddles are maxed out vertically, and I couldn't get any more turns from the truss rod bit I'm still getting a bit of Fret buzz and choking.
