so ive just about finished my first build. ive never done anything more than change strings on my guitars, so this was pretty much jump in and see what happens with whatever tools I have laying round the garage.

I brought the body in a roughly cut and routed state off ebay, leaving me to get the wood to a paintable standard, fill a few small flaws and drill a few of the necessary holes. the neck is just a cheapy off ebay as im waiting for a MIM 72 custom tele neck to appear on ebay, preferably one in need of a refret. obviously I had to reshape the neck pocket for this. I also carved the heel to give better fret access.

at first I wanted to wrap the body in some really nice fabric I found, but couldn't find a way to do this to a decent standard. I brought the gold bridge to go with the fabric early on as it also meant I could mock up the neck. once I had ditched the fabric idea this meant sticking with gold hardware but a new paint colour.

people commented on what a shame it was to cover up the swamp ash body as it had really nice grain, but it was a 2 piece and the join was off center and very noticeable, which I couldn't live with. by chance, when priming the body in white, the paint sunk into the grain and as I held it in the light, I actually quite liked it. added a bit of interest to the finish without looking as massively odd as the unfinished grain pattern. so I eventually chose a satin finish, and applied as little paint as I could.

im very pleased I decided to do this. 8)

wiring is a standard les paul kit, hooked up to some Iron Gear Rolling Mill pickups. I didn't want cheap pickups, but I didn't want to spend loads either, and with the reviews and some sound clips, for 70 quid a pair I thought why not?

its not quite finished, it needs a setup, and im giving it a while for the neck to settle now its strung up. also ive made a small booboo somewhere with the soldering, so am yet to plug it in. unplugged, the guitar sounds noticeably louder than my MIM fender strat. the satin paint makes it oh so very tactile in your hands, for me much preferable to a gloss finish, though without the grain pattern in mine it may have looked a bit bland. as you can see depending on the light the paint is one of many shades :?

Very cool (and not a bit feminine!)...love the wood grain!

Now, we need a sound sample...

I think you have a wonderful looking guitar that you made. Not sure why you would think that "also I am well aware its a bit 'feminine'" as with all of my girls (guitars) they are suppose to look beautiful and stunning, and your girl looks very nice

Congrats on a well accomplished project. I find myself wondering if you've got cover plates for the back as it would feel unfinished.

That is one good looking guitar.

Nice Job and I like the color combo...except the headstock, never been much of a painted headstock guy, but it is your guitar project.

Enjoy it.

Cheers for the replies. I will indeed be fitting some cavity plates, I am also toying with the idea of a small half size scratchplate, similar to a cabronita one.

It turns out I've got at least one faulty pot maybe 2, so will be a little while before I get that sorted.

I always liked painted headstocks, but never had one. I never had a carved heel either, so thought I'd do them both here.

As for calling my guitar girls and thinking they should be beautiful, that not for me. I don't name them, they aren't my girls, and my black 72 custom tele could never be called pretty hahaha!

Did you use wood filler first?

Ha - a Les StratoTelePaul! Neat! 8)

And judging from the neck plate it's the Deluxe version of that famous guitar too. Stylish.

Got a name for that shade of blue? Is it a car colour or something else?

And for your next project? After all, nobody ever builds just one guitar...

Kudos, Moochy. Nice work. Now, enjoy that geet!

Cheers - C

I am in awe. Very nice.

I would have put a 22 fret neck on. Oh yeah, Rosewood too.

Just suggestions of what I would have done.

I can dream.

I only used filler where the grain had torn, presumably why the body was a factory reject. There wasn't that much to do. I didn't use any grain filler, obviously as that would have filled that lovely grain.

The maple neck was originally chosen to go with the fabric wrap idea, however I am well aware of how good a rosewood neck looks with this light shade of blue. I usually prefer maple, but I might change for this guitar.

Ceri - The colour came from B&Q and is a satin hobby paint they sell to repaint your wooden furniture. They do loads of colours, gloss matt and satin, gold silver etc and lots of primers. I will probably keep using them when I do my next one, I'm impressed with the finish and ease of use. This blue was called 'December Solstice'. How do they come up with these names?

My next project will be a tele shape with a strat neck I suspect, although now I've got an SSS strat, a HH strat, an SS tele, an SH tele and a twin p90 tele, not sure what else to do........... I need to use this paint up!
