This is not a thread about "how good Dylan is". Some love him, some can't stand him ... I am somewhere in the middle. That being said ...

The car commercial that he was in during the Super Bowl surprised me. Dylan always seemed like the guy who never seems to endorse any regular commercial products. Maybe that is only because I don't follow him that closely? Or, was any one else also a little surprised to see Dylan in a car commercial?

He's already done Victoria's Secret and Pepsi ads, so he didn't have any cred with the left anymore.
Might as well stop pretending and grab that cash with both hands.

... but
... but
... but

You just said he lost his cred.
How's he supposed to take a stand after he's grabbed that cash with both hands?

What's the difference weather he or Brad Pitt does a commercial. Dough is Dough. Until they start handing it out you gotta make it some how.

Maybe Zimmer's exposing himself in preparation for a Presidential run.

But Dough isn't Dough.
To some, selling your endorsement to the highest bidder is equivalent to selling your butt to the highest bidder. If principles are for sale, they're not principles.

The people who believe that have my admiration, however...

Many of those same people are wealthy far beyond many/most of us will ever be. That's not a criticism, it's just a fact. I don't accept the supposition that "money doesn't mean anything." If that were true, they should give away all their possessions and money, and resolve to live on $20,000 a year or less.

I've been (relatively) well off, and I've been poorer than dirt. Because money is/was not my main goal either time, I had equal parts of happiness and sorrow during those perspective times...but I can say this--things were easier during those "wealthier" times. I was able to experience things I could not have in the leaner times (possession come and go, but some experiences and events will never be possible for the poor).

Is Dylan prostituting himself out? Perhaps...but taking that logic to extremes, any artist (musical, visual or otherwise) who tours, records, promotes or displays his/her work is prostituting themselves as well...when does the "righteous artist" become the "dancing monkey"? Many of the artists held in high esteem for never "selling out" (Hendrix, Joplin, etc.) died before they had to (financially) or before they had the opportunity to (they weren't mainstream enough to be offered such an opportunity).

Also, the commercial was about "Americans coming out of tough times" (I'm paraphrasing here)...Dylan, the guy with the blue collar roots/image could have been celebrating the resilience the "common folk" who build those cars. I'm not saying he was or wasn't, I'm just saying who knows his motivation...and what does it really matter.

I like Dylan for his music and songwriting. His music has inspired, consoled, cajoled and built me up at many different junctures in my life. If he wants to grab a wad of cash, i think he's earned it, and I won't hold it against him, as long as he's not promoting something despicable or improper.

There's a good argument for both sides regarding his "selling out" but Chrysler in not going to make a car for me!

Bob Dylan is, of course, free to do what he likes.
And I'm free to think and say what I like about that, and choose not to go to any Dylan concerts.

Becoming famous as a musician is all about making the moola. Make enough you can do some good with it but never to the point where you do with out  It's a job!
