I currently own a Squier CV Telecaster and Super Champ X2.

I’m happy with my minimal set up. However, I kinda wishing I had some pedals and unsure if the amp is cutting it.

What guitar, amp and pedals would you suggest?

What's your budget like?
I mean, it would be silly of us to suggest a $99 boost pedal and a $299 Excelsior if you have a $3000 budget, and likewise it wouldn't be nice if we recommended a full stack Mesa/Boogie and a Custom Shop Tele if all you had was $400.

I'm going for a minimal budget set up. I had a bunch of effects but sold them along with the 40 waters. I don't need a loud amp just a nice recording amp. This is why I bought the super champ in the first place.

A tele and a fender tube amp are perfect for country twang... toss in a compression pedal and you've got a great chicken pickin' setup. The biggest trick to the country tone is having a light touch.

Alternative rock is a whole 'nother ballgame, but all you really need to do is crank the tube amp into saturation, strum a lot harder and throw a fuzz pedal in the loop instead of compression.

Use the bridge pickup for country and the neck for alternative rock.

That covers most of it, I'd say.

If budget is an issue then a guitar into the Super Champ X2 will take you most of the way there. That's the point of the on-board effects on those sorts of amp, after all.

Personally, I have a strange prejudice against FX inside amps and would prefer to add a pedal or two in front; obviously some flavour of drive or fuzz, and maybe a delay and a compressor as well. Perfectly usable versions of which can be had for very little money from entry level makers such as Behringer, Danelectro and such. A quick Google just found this website:

http://www.cheaperpedals.com/

I don't think I've ever tried any of those pedals (or even heard of some of them) so I have no idea as to quality. But budget pedals can often get you further than some of us would like to admit. For that matter, there's many on this Forum who are proud of their Dano pedals: plenty of bite for the bucks.

And for better quality at reasonable prices there's always Ebay. The world is full of guys who think they want to play the guitar, buy a heap of gear and then find they can't be bothered and so sell it all again in good-as-new condition for half the street price.

And a last possibility is a floor-based multi-FX unit, such as the Boss ME-25, ME-50 and similar. Again, even cheaper if bought pre-owned. Boutique-minded players sniff at these kinds of gizmos but they're amazingly good value for money and will get you a long way down the road.

Some options.

Cheers - C

A wide range between alt.rock to country sounds, IMO.

Tele with compressor and dirt pedals would be my choice.

Haha!! Probably the best advice!

For my budget I’m pretty solid at the moment, I guess.

Eventually I would like to try a new Fender ’68 Custom Princeton Reverb and see how that compares to a Fender '65 Princeton Reverb Vintage Reissue.

From there a compressor and overdrive would fit the bill but that is going to be a lot more then I want to spend ATM.
