While I was between appointments out in town today I went into the only local pawn shop to check out the gear situation while poking around the junk and low budget guitars I found a gem among the garbage.I saw a guitar among the junk that looked out of place and although it was filthy and smudged up,I knew that it was something special. When I saw the headstock I saw that it was a Hagstrom Select Series SL-2.I tried it out through a Vox amp and it just sang-even with the 5 filthy half-dead strings on it.Anyway I told them that I would take it and was pleased to find out that it came with not only an excellent plus-lined case but that there was 20% off it too.Anyway I brought her home and cleaned her up and she's just exquisite, the build quality is meticulous as too is the fit and finish. It has beautifully bookmatched quilt maple top with what appears to be maple binding around the body. The ebony fretboard has incredible abalone inlays that are done with different coloured shells in each inlay, just superb workmanship.I haven't put the new strings on yet but when I do and get the intonation done I'm sure that she'll certainly blow any Les Paul away. I hope to be able to get pix in the near future.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I remember finding a Hagstrom in goodwill once. Still pains me that I didn't have the cash to get it.

Those are excellent guitars, happy NGD!

Back in the 70s, when the Hagstroms had rows of brightly colored plastic pushbuttons, Sweden had the prettiest girls and the ugliest guitars in the world.
That said, they do have some really pretty guitars too.

I asked Blinkers to drop by and check her out,so maybe he can give me a hand posting some pix-since I'm such an incredible Luddite.I can't find any reference to country of origin but I suspect that she's probably a Chinese Samick judging from the incredible inlay, bookmatched quilt maple top and binding work done on her.I believe that all Hagstroms are MIC these days but if as in some guitars, some are made in their "home" country,it's likely this one would be as it certainly must be a top shelf model.

I already have two 60s Hagstroms,a circa 1964 Hagstrom II that's CAR with an SG shaped body like their 8 string bass had and 2 single coil pickups along with the trademark super skinny Hagstrom neck. The other one is a 1962 Corvette with a one piece mahogany neck-through-body,ebony fretboard, master and solo volumes plus the usual row of coloured rocker switches. This guitar cost $750 when new and for just $300 more you could buy a brand new Volkswagon. It has 3 single coil pickups and it plays like a dream with action so close they must have used a micrometer to set it up.

I have to put a set of my .007-.038 Rev. Willy's Texas Lottery strings-that Billy Gibbons swears by-and do a set up no doubt, just to get her done to suit my hands.I can't wait to wind her out through an overdriven amp and see how she sounds played clean, from what I heard in the shop, she will sound really smooth when played clean.

Love those strings--I use a .009 gauge set...sweet, rich, smooth and tuneful...

Tell Blinkers to hurry up...I wanna see this axe!!

I have taken the pix of the new Hagstrom-along with a few pix of her with my old Hagstroms from the 60s but when Blinkers dropped by the other night he was pressed for time and we didn't get the chance to get the pix put up.He was pretty impressed by the sound and everything else about my "steal",considering that the case alone sells for $150,the guitar was pretty well a giftIt really blows me away that the people at the pawn shop didn't see the fastidious attention to detail and quality of the build and materials in this guitar but their inattentiveness really paid off in spades for me.I have gotten in contact with the good folks at Hagstrom and found that the guitar is a Hagstrom Ultra Swede Select SL-2 model and when it was made it was one of their top models and had a MSRP of almost $1,200.I was right about the cap being quilt maple and it being a cap and not a veneer as often used on guitars with Mahogany bodies.I was also right in my decoding of the serial number, she was made in Feb. 2007.Although she was maggoty filthy, under all that crud and grime and greasy fingerprints there was very little evidence of any dings or scrapes or any other body damage and now that she's really prettied up I can only see a couple of minute dings and a couple of marks that aren't scrapes but still refuse to come off, making me suspect that someone had placed her too close where some painting was going on,but they are on the back and are very small.None of the dings or marks are on the front of the guitar so it still looks like it just came out of the box.

Hopefully some night during the week I can get the pix up.
