Hi Everyone,

I am upgrading my amp and have never owned a tube amp before. I am trying to decide between the DRRI and the SuperSonic 22. I have seen this discussed before so please excuse my post! Does anyone own a SuperSonic 22 and can say it is a great amp w/o any problems? Most posts that I read indicate problems with the SuperSonic line of amps. Also is the clean on a SuperSonic as good as the clean on the DRRI? I have not played through one yet but am going to try and make it to GC to test one out this weekend if they have one in stock!

Thanks

I own one. Great amp, but I did have a couple small problems that were quickly fixed, free under warranty. With Fender's extensive warranty network there's usually an authorized repair tech. very close. No recurrences, so it wasn't a big deal to me. And BTW, the DRRI was experiencing similar problems during this same time frame.

My only regret is that I bought it a couple of months before the release of the head version, which I would have preferred. :(

The clean is very clean and sparkly, but my favorite is the 'fat' sound on the clean channel.

Lots of great sounds in this amp including the two-stage gain. Would've been nice if it had the tremelo as does the DRRI, but I can add a pedal for that.

You can't go wrong with either the DRRI or SS22, but I think the SS22 is more versatile.

Test them both side-by-side when you go to GC.

If you have/like/use an overdrive pedal, I think the DRRI would be the better choice.

The main thing the SS22 gives you is the overdrive feature; you miss out on tremolo and one of the best reverbs on the market, though. I'm not saying the SS22 is a bad choice (they're dang good sounding amps), but the DRRI is in a slightly higher class, IMHO.

I've tried a few SS22's and I thought they were great at lower volumes, but got all wonky when you cranked them up a bit. The tone would just get fizzy with a fair amount of hiss. Sounded pretty cool under around five on the volume dial to me though. I'm a big fan of the DR and DRRI. That's what I'd go with. Plug and Play and takes effects really well. As always, the choice is yours.

Well, if you want to do any building demolition, or go deaf buy the SS60. Jeez that thing is loud! Sounds fantastic, too.

The clean side gives you a choice of Bassman or Vibroverb voicings.

I know for a fact that Brad has used a '22' professionally with good results. The best I can offer IMHO is to weigh carefully how you're going to use the amp and what it brings to the table stock. You can always move to signal processing for additional effects.

I've tried several of Fender amps over the years. My two favorites are the DR and the 59' RI Bassman. Haven't tried the the supersonic series yet. I'm sort of concerned that Fender has too many amplifier products - it almost seems like amplifier flavor of the month. Anyway - you can't go wrong with the classics from Fender. I've heard excellent live sounds from a Deville 4x10 from a R&B/Funk band.

If you could please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, and all of the people all of the time, you wouldn't need a flavor of the month. However, there's no accounting for tastes, the demands of an individual's musical project, or an individual's perception of tone. Hence, as many bases as possible demand coverage. Manufacturers are in this game to win. Joe Bonamassa just retired his trusty backline, for an all-Fender equipped system. He claims that he's 'hearing' things differently lately. I can just see thousands of his audience tearing their hair out about what to do with their newly 'out of favor' gear.

That's interesting... I wonder what amp head config Bonamassa is going to be using.... His last backline was Bad-Ass...

I think that JB could make almost anything sound good, so it probably doesn't matter what kind of gear he uses.

AND, he'll always sound like JB, regardless.

Joe Bonamassa's one of my favorite young players. I know, he's been around since he was a kid, but he's still young compared to me. He as all kinds if sig stuff. JB Wah, Fuzzface, cords. I don't really care as long as he sounds good and is being creative. The Fender lineup seems a bit strange since all he's ever done was tout the virtues of the Marshall Jubilee. Interesting seeing smaller combos as a backline. The wattage is still pretty much there though.
