Back in March when my son and I got our guitars he got a Mexican Stratocaster HSS and I got an American Standard. At the time I could not tell much difference in the sound of the two guitars. Now it seems like all the difference in the world when I go from my guitar to his. Mine just sounds better.

What happened?

Experience? At first you can't notice anything but as you play you can tell a difference. When I started out, the only difference I could figure out was a strat on a tube amp vs. acoustic guitar :D. All electric guitars sounded pretty same at that time...

Yep, in some time your ears will be better trained and you will hear the fine differences.

Pretty soon you will be able to hear what fretboard, color of guitar, finish, guage of strings, brand of strings, etc.

Of course I'm just kidding, but I have heard guys claim they can hear of that stuff.

The one thing that I am always amazed by is how two guitars with
the same body style and electrics installed sound so differant if
the the bodies are made of differant woods such as alder to ash.

Actually you can make two guitars out of the same woods from the same trees, make them side by side with all the same parts and you will have two guitars that will have slightly different tonal qualities.

You are right there I have seen that. A lot depends on the grain and quility of the wood. When I was young I cut timber for a local logging outfit and one
tree could have several differant quilities of logs cut from it. With a vineer
log being the best no knots or cats eyes and scars.

Your ears are probably just used to your guitar. I did the same thing wtih my dad's Ibanez. My Fender sounded the same as his at first and now I think his sounds funny.

I've kinda run into the same type of situation. I have a 1961 Gibson Melody Maker and I thought it was the best sounding guitar on earth. Then I got a MIM Fender Strat and I feel its a bit more full and flexible than the GMM. And when I go to one to the other, I can still tell the world a difference.
