signed on to the forum, and was surprised by the 8 digit caps/no caps thing. why is such a password neccessary? i mean, c'mon, it's not like anyone's banking/personal info is here. how about lowering the paranoia some and loosening the password to allow one i use on every other forum on the entire internet?

From a practical stand point this forum can be linked to emails and other accounts. From another standpoint it may just be a default setting that no one ever changed. I think from FMIC's standpoint they'd rather not deal with people getting targeted on a site they manage. Honestly, I've been here from the beginning. Though I do tend to come and go for long stretches. I think this is the first complaint about this I can remember. I'd think this type of question/complaint might be better addressed in PM to a moderator. JMO, of course.

Spammers. They buy a big block of cracked user names and passwords, and then try them on hundreds of different message boards, posting spam (and malware pointing) messages in the user's name when login works.
Not using the same password everywhere thwarts that - if someone gets access to a database of username/passwords, it won't do them any good for other sites, unless people reuse their password like you do. You're part of the problem, dude. Get a password vault app or device, and stop re-using passwords!

You don't get it. It's not about you, it's about everyone else. We don't want spam and malware links because visitors re-use their passwords between sites.
Again, you are part of the problem, whether you've been hacked or not. By advocating re-using weak passwords, you encourage crackers to break and crack message boards and sell the lists.

Hi peter: you could always use your four digit password twice (e.g. ABCDABCD) if an eight digit one is hard to remember.

Also, if you click "log me on automatically each visit" when you next sign in you will never have to enter the password again: the Forum will remember your computer/phone and log you on, er, automatically.

Not too time consuming.

Cheers - C

Although next time you clear your browser cache, you will need that password again (I have Internet Explorer set to automatically clear the browser cache every time you exit the program, so I log in each and every time).

I deal with setting password policies at work. You shouldn't avoid the strong password thing. It's for your protection. As TheKingofPain pointed out above, sometimes hackers don't go after your bank account, etc. directly. What they do is compromise one of your less secure accounts, and then see if they can use that account to gain access to other accounts. Sometimes that's a long shot, sometimes not.

Some people would use the same password for their Fender Forum account, their email account, and their bank account. And when you're setting a password policy, it generally must be global, you can't ask each user if they're stupid enough to have the same password for everything.

Hi strings10927: yep, me too, for the same sensible security related reasons as you.

But then you and I don't find typing an eight digit password a problem, so it's OK. For those who think it's a nuisance I guess the automatic option is a risk they're prepared to take.

BTW, presumably clicking "log me on automatically" saves your computer's ID on Fender's system? So clearing your browser's cache won't affect it? I ask because I don't use that feature so don't know.

Cheers - C

It usually works the other way around, when you click "log me on automatically", a file is downloaded to your computer which maintains your preference. But the file is stored in either Temporary Internet Files or Cookies - so when you clear the browser cache, the file is deleted and the computer 'forgets' your preference.

Ah-ha, it's that way round, is it? Noted: thanks! :)

Meantime, far as eight digit passwords are concerned, I've typed my Forum password so many thousands of times my fingers do it so fast without me even having to think about it I almost can't remember what it is! I might have to ask my fingers to type slowly, just so's I can see what they do.

Of course, sneaky keystroke capturing malware has no such difficulties. Which is a reason folks' suggestion to use different passwords for different websites is good advice...

also, not a bad idea to change your passwords once in a while.

Definitely.

...Though I admit that for non-finance-related sites I'm too lazy to do that as often as we should. If anyone ever hacks my Forum account I shall have to come back to this thread and hang my head in shame.

Use a password manager - many of them out there and they work great.
