Is this going to make previous electrics obsolete? I can see where it will have a real impact with performers.

iOS is obsolete as itself.

+1

There's no support for future releases from Apple.

What are you okes on about.iOS is not obsolete and will continue indefinitely from Apple for the foreseeable future. The iOS compatible strat from Fender may be a fad but it is purely an internally asio audio interfaced strat that can use the native cable from Apple to connect to an iOS device. The audio engine also has physical plugable presets (this seems to be archaic as a simple software upload would suffice) This strat should connect to any future iOS device until the cable technology is changed again.

I don't see this product as replacing the original strat, or becoming the future for fender. It is purely a sideline project to fill a small gap in their catalogue I think. Bedroom warriors may enjoy this product but I don't see myself buying an electronic strat just to connect my guitar to my iphone.

I think there will be many that will buy them. Mostly the ones that feel this will be a quick way for them to track some of their playing, but will NEVER replace conventional guitars at all.

Apple makes no promises of future backwards compatibility, which is what is relevant here. Apple has a long history of not being compatible with older devices after upgrades, as the APIs change and the support goes away. There are two year old cars that can't talk to the newest iPhones because of Apple's unilateral changes breaking compatibility.
That's the problem, and why it doesn't matter how long Apple will support iOS.

But that's generally the problem across all products of all kinds where in order to advance in technology and design you have to sacrifice and make redundant certain things to the point where compatibility is eventually lost. Fender did not make this guitar to connect with iOS devices of 10 years from now, they made it to connect to current devices. So it is up to the user to decide about upgrading this device to the point where it no longer works with the guitar or to keep it at the last working OS.

I suppose the buyer of the guitar will take the gamble of future compatability.

This is not an universal truth, thankfully. The Unix philosophy, which to some extent has survived into Linux, is that you maintain backwards compatibility, and instead add new features separate from the old ones. You don't break an API to make improvements, you add a new API.

And that's the problem. Had they made it to not work with any specific devices, but published their own API and example software, any OS now or in the future would be able to connect to it, and there would be no problem.
