If Fender took out a restraining order against me playing their instruments (you guys weren't serious about that were you?) it would be an SG or Les Paul Jr. in heartbeat.

I disagree. I've had issues with Fenders more than any other brand. So other than the amplifiers; which I still find to be of decent quality, I'd be more inclined to say that about Fender, and especially concerning their customer service. I'm not going to say that Fender sucks, because that's making a blanket statement; there is no all, and not everything is the same. There have been a couple of Fender instruments I've had that were really nice, especially a 90's Japanese-made, 50's reissue P-Bass. The nicest Fender instruments I've played were Japanese-made from at least the 90's.

The Gibson instruments I've encountered were wonderful. The only reason I didn't buy one instead of my Schecter bass, was because the Schecter was too good of a deal to pass up, and I needed an instrument with at least 21 frets. I find the Schecter well suited to my specifications, and it's one of the nicest instruments I've played in 20 years. That's not to say I won't consider a Gibson in the future, especially now that they offer several models under the $1000 price point. Those might not have as many bells and whistles as the expensive models, but that's fine with me.

We can agree to disagree. That's fair.

I find that statement utterly fascinating because I've the exact opposite experience.
I've not had any reliability or quality issues with any modern Fender guitar I've owned or played regardless of country of origin in the last 25 years. Admittedly the newest Fender guitars I personally own or owned were both 2004 MIA models. I also admit to not having tried any of the Chinese models. I suppose it's possible new issues have crept into the lineup since that time. If they have I have not encountered them in stores or in my friends' collections. I took issue with the tone of the Lace Sensor pups from 25 years ago but that was a tone issue and not reliability or QA/QC issue.
Modern Fender amps are a completely different story. Issues abound; not 25 years ago but recently. I gradually came to the point where I no longer consider Fender to be a viable amp manufacturer for my own use.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

maybe what you do with them is boring...

You're right, but the only guitars I ever see played around where I live are Les Pauls and Ibanez Icemen. When you hear too much of the same thing it colors your opinion.

If you think they suck your probably playing knockoffs. Gibson's don't suck. They all have their place, just like Fenders do.

That is interesting. I will say the instruments I've had issues with were basses, but I do have a brand new Tele that's fine. Straight out of the box no problem at all. The only thing I did was change the strings to Ernie Ball 10's for personal preference. None of these basses were bad sounding, but usually some problem related to the neck. One of these was even US made, which really annoyed me because those are supposed to be the better made ones. It could be just bad luck with me and Fender basses, with the exception of the Japanese-made stuff. I've always liked those and never had an issue with them. Perhaps others have had other experiences, but this is just how it worked out with me.

I've never ran into an issue with a Fender amp, though. I will say that other than the Rumble 350 combo (which has been excellent so far, knock on wood since I have a show coming up,) the majority of those amps were at least back in the 90's when I used them, and were bass amps. I can't say too much about the guitar amps, other than a 1982 Super Champ that's a little power house. I never tried out anything new because I've really had no reason to, since guitar isn't my main live instrument, and I have the Super Champ to use.

Really my only grip with Fender is that the way my last problem was handled (it is also not the first time this happened, too.) That put a sour experience on the whole thing for me. All in all, I don't think they are the worst, but I'm very apprehensive about buying any more basses from them that are new.

I'd fit right in--I have both.

I agree also- I've had two Gibsons recently- a Les Paul and an SG both USA that just didn't float with what I needed-- too many little issues that should have been fixed by the mgf in the first place ( volume and treble pot oddball stuff etc)- BUT my Strats (3) I've never had any problems with at all in 12 years. Not the slightest problem.
As for Fender amps- my buddies who play guitar ALL went thru the Fender amp buying phase- they all go with other amps now. I've owned 2 Fender guitar amps and they did not work for me either.

Really? Now where is the American made $250 MSRP Fender that's comparable to my American made $500 MSRP Gibson SGJ?

Sorry but that's a nit-pick.
For every rule there is an exception.
It's still a general rule despite the exception.
There are men in this world who suffer through life without having penises.
It's still a general rule that men have penises.
