I still have a bunch.

Next - maybe linn is stirring the pot on this anyway- But one thing is for sure- Fender Basses are the #1 bass in the whole wide parking lot dudes! Write it down.

Hahhaha, I'm convinced that the entire Gibson bass market is kept afloat by guys stuck in a band with guitarists who are afraid to let them use a real bass because it would take attention off them.

Everytime I've ever heard a Gibson bass. No matter how good the player. I always think. "Man, that would have sounded really good on a P or J." The only time I've ever heard someone get a really sweet tone from one was Simon Gallup from The Cure. Even that was the Epi Jack Cassidy that he plays.

The guitars definitely have their place. Mike Ness gets killer tone on his LP through his Bassman.

A friend recently got a Midtown Bass that sounds amazing.

They should give him a signature model quick.

Every time Fender has tried to use Gibson-ish characteristics to their own guitars, it's been a mistake. I'm talking about block inlays, neck binding...all that stuff(except for the mudbucker).

Another thing about Gibson that I don't care for, is the plywood they use for the semi-hollowbodies. Plywood.

The SG-EB3 type basses do have a cool sound..but are painful to play. Why don't they taper the necks on those things?

I've never played a real Thunderbird, so no comment there.

Now..the Les Paul guitar is one of man's best creations, but I still prefer the Stratocaster.

I remember in the early to middle 70's when I was digging bass and I played an SG bass- (it was called and eb or ebo ii or 9 or whatever) thru a roll and tuck Kustom. It wasn't all that easy to play even with the short girl neck. Then the guy who owned the bass traded it in for a 71 P bass. OMG after he went home- (he used to leave the bass at the practice place) -I would sneek down and play the P bass. It was so much better sounding- it was as if the sky had opened up. I knew right then from that moment on that I wanted a P bass and I was now going to become a for real bass player for life. So I did both. So I began this journey of the unknown thru the casting away of an inferior instrument and beheld the mighty answer by realizing the FENDER bass was the Holy Grail. I think I'll go cry or get drunk- not sure which one- maybe both.

Plywood? Not like the Home depot! The sides of a 335 are made from 3 veneer sheets of maple press formed to shape then a rim assembly is added to the inside and a one piece top and back is glued on then routed for a binding. Binding is a time consuming job its self,
All builders use veneer and press form the sides a practice used in forming wood for ages. Sure not applying steam to thin wood and forming curves

The Wife and I took a tour of the Memphis factory.

Playing Devil's Advocate here, I have to say I don't think all that much of them myself. No hate mail, please. It's just one man's opinion and when it comes to personal opinions there are no wrong answers. I wouldn't go so far as to say all Gibsons suck but I have owned a few Les Pauls in my day. They are definitely sexy as hell to look at and they certainly have that certain mystique ... by the bucketful ... but when it comes time to cull my herd the Les Pauls seem to be the ones to go first every time. I now only have one LP and it's an Epiphone. I'm not sure if I'll ever buy another Gibson. Maybe ... but probably not. They just don't do it for me the way their price tag should suggest. I do not believe they are twice the guitar that a MIA Fender is but they cost twice the green when comparing on a level field. Sure, you can buy a Studio for less than a Standard but Fender also sold and still sells lower priced instruments. The now discontinued Hwy 1 models were MIA and they were cheaper than the Standards so they could conceivably be compared to a Studio. I honestly think if I were to ever get a hankering for another Gibson style guitar I'd prolly go with a PRS. I like the fact they have a wider sound. All the Gibsons I ever owned were pretty dull and boomy sounding.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Though mostly a Fender fan,I do like to hear a Gibson and/or Epiphone once in a while. Their humbucker pickups do have a nice warm sound. I have tried some Epiphones in the store and I think they are good guitars,...the "Dot" and the Sheraton II are the ones I have tried and liked. I'll turn 50 next Tuesday, but I don't
think the family would want to fork out money for two $500.00+ guitars(a Tele and a Sheraton II). I like the sound of a Tele,so I would most likely choose that one.
But to answer the poll,...No,they don't!

From a purely historical standpoint, it's hard to beat Gibson. They started manufacturing musical instruments 50 years before Fender even existed. For shear variety, they far exceed Fender. Fender is mainly known for 4 instruments - Tele, Strat, P-Bass & Jazz, while Gibson has made a multitude of different instruments from mandolins to guitars in more varieties than you can count. But we are comparing apples & oranges - Chevy vs. Ford. Each company has their merits as well as their flops. I'm a Gibson lover, but I play a Fender bass.

Well I had to go play my Les Paul and guess what. It still doesn't suck, maybe I should have check on the SG also but I'm pretty sure it won't suck yet either.

I have a L.P. exactly like that, is that a Traditional Pro? Gibson definitely does not suck in my opinion. I dig the $@!& outta my Les Paul and my S.G. Standard ...

1) Yes - Les Paul Standard Trad Pro -- The pickups, the coiltaps, the knobs, the tuners. For me, there are no mods I could make that would improve it. Great playing instrument.
2) Ironically, similar to you, my other Gibson is also an SG Standard (1979).
3) Your user name is Mopar guy. I also have a hemi 2011 Dodge Charger red-badge R/T in Toxic Orange.

Yup, same guitar, I like it ALOT. My S.G. is a 2013 model and so is my Strat. The R/T Chargers have ALOT of balls, that Hemi is a monster!

The SG-EB3 you're referring to, is an Epi. Gibson doesn't do an SG-EB3. Epi's are heavier in weight, and have a lot thicker neck than the current SG Std. neck.
Gibson SG Std. Basses come standard with Quarter Sawn necks also. I wish my Fender Am. Std. Jazz had a Quarter Sawn neck. The Fender Am. Std. Jazz is only a $50. less than the Gibson SG Std.

SG Std.

They'll charge twice the green just because it is Green. Paint one green and all of the sudden it has a $5,000 price tag on it.
