That game is so stupid (probably because I'm not good at it). All I can think of is the ending of that South Park episode.

I wouldn't have a problem with it if it was actually realistic or it pushed more kids to learn to play the real deal.

I pray for Gibson to win their lawsuit.

"As a result of the present lawsuit with Gibson Guitars, the player will also be able to customize their own guitar for the game to a high degree..."

Taken from an article for Guitar Hero 4. Here's the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar_hero_4

And here's another article with information on the lawsuit: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13772_3-9899705-52.html

I'm reminded of a quote that hangs on one of my teacher's walls... I don't remember it, exactly, but it is something to the effect of

"If only the best birds sang, the forest would be silent."

Should no one sing karaoke, because they aren't professional singers? If they enjoy it, let them. Just because they get applause in a karaoke bar doesn't mean that they are expecting a record deal.

Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Drum Mania, karaoke, or whatever else is not a "threat" to real, talented musicians.

Believe it or not, it is possible to play guitar and play Guitar Hero. Maybe not simultaneously.

There are people who like to do things other than play guitar. In fact, all of my guitar-playing friends play Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

As much as I love playing music, I hate how insecure we all are.

Anyway, yes, I play Guitar Hero. I'm not terribly good at it, but I have fun. It's nice to be able to play side-by-side with one of my friends, especially if they don't play guitar and I don't get to play with them any other way.

No kidding, you produce game music? My son Noah is an animator for LucasArts (formerly EA, Pixar before that).... And you still find time to score games and national spots, all while working as creative lead at a major ad agency? Hey, my older son is at McCann right now, working on the Microsoft account.... maybe he knows you!

Give us a link to your website. Tell us which games titles and which spots we would have heard... I work in that business too, just not in such an exalted position.

I'm not an idiot.... I just don't understand why a big-time music producer like you sounds just like a pissed-off little high school guitar player, and why someone who supposedly works in the industry has this out-of-proportion disdain for the people who buy the games.

I'll restrain myself from continuing the name-calling.

The music, game coding and designing are all part of the creative lead role. I'm not a big time music producer and never said I was. "I" play, and write and record, for myself, others, and clients. I have no interest in producing music for others.

I work for the biggest interactive ad agency in the world, and you should know exactly which one that is. And you'll also know we work with pretty much every brand you'll see in the course of the day. We'll do promotional games for them in Flash or Director (some C), print ads, online contests, help concept and art-direct broadcast. And, I dont' need to explain anything else to you. I dont' care if you believe or not. In fact, don't! Good. But because I don't like silly fake-music "games" and mention it, you feel the need to try to belittle me. Must make you feel better or something. Go play guitar hero.

It's a game, nothing more, nothing less. Anyone who believes they're a Guitar God because they've mastered the Expert Mode will be sadly embarassed when someone sticks the real thing in their hands.

My 14-year-old son started playing GH, and then Rock Band. His mom got him a Behringer starter kit for Christmas; in the past couple of months he's been spending more time with the real thing (or as close to the real thing as Berhinger produces :P ) than with the game. The only way the games affect his RL playing is his choice of songs he wants to learn.

Neither Guitar Hero nor Rock Band (nor karaoke, for that matter) threaten legitimate musicians, any more than the Gran Turismo series cheapens NASCAR or Mortal Kombat lessens the achievements of true martial artists. To "hate" them is a waste of emotion and blood pressure.

They're games. Nothing more, nothing less.

I agree with Jim and jbond here- GH and RB are just games- heck I'm thinking of getting one or the other just because I think it would be fun. And I've been playing keyboards/guitar for over 40 years. I have to also agree dgonz that is does seem you are going a bit overboard about the folks that play those games- I really think that most of them don't feel they are musicians because they can push 5 buttons. And if they do...well they need to get out more.
I look at those games as an opportunity to expose people to differnt kinds of music -and hey somewhere along the way, a few of them might even want to learn to play a real instrument - fancy that! :)

I like to play guitar hero. Its good fun and its especially fun to play against friends to see who gets a better score and just have a good time messing around with non guitar playing friends. I play guitar far more often than I play Guitar Hero. I also love playing Madden Football I even won the Super Bowl on it. This doesnt make me think I have what it takes to be an NFL Quarterback. These are video games not real life. The Day someone goes to prison for killing people on Grand Theft Auto or Gets a Super Bowl ring for playing Maddne is the day that I will think that Guitar Hero is a legitimate threat to real musicians.
