I just want to know if any people here like guitar hero. for me, it's against guitar law. sure they have good songs but it screws up your fingers and gets them used to five colored frets instead of 24 maple frets. I just want to know if I'm the only one who thinks so.

No. If you like video games, knock yourself out. You want to be a real 'guitar hero', try learning to play the real thing and stop posturing and posing as if you could even come close pushing five buttons on a cheap plastic controller. Despite the perception (these games, air guitar), mastering an instrument and attaining musicianship requires years of practice, dedication, and learning - not squinting or growling the popular way...

Those plastic controllers ARE cheaply made, but they're by no means cheap to buy! (can you say $45 for a new one??).

But you have a good point, and I agree. I would also like to add, you feel better about yourself when you learn something hard on the real thing rather than beating some song on the hardest difficulty. Real guitar is limitless, Guitar Hero is restricting.

No, I'm not into Guitar Hero. I'm a guitar player, I'd rather play my guitars. Seems a waste of time to me

That game is so stupid (probably because I'm not good at it). All I can think of is the ending of that South Park episode.

I wouldn't have a problem with it if it was actually realistic or it pushed more kids to learn to play the real deal.

I pray for Gibson to win their lawsuit.

Guitar Hero is a video game. It has nothing to do with playing the guitar (W.O.W. does not have anything to do with real war), it does not diminish you as a player by existing (just as Mario Kart doesn't diminish NASCAR), it doesn't mean a freaking thing. Chill.

This web comic is my fave comment on the non-controversy:

I agree. GH is a game, it's fun and it's great for hand eye co=ordination.

GH is not a threat to guitar playing - as I have had some try and tell me. In the end you can not create new music from GH and so if people are serious, they'll pick up the real deal.

Although I see the argument against GH, I do think that there should be tolerance - I know alot of people who have played the game and are now learning guitar for real.

And I know a few guitarists who play it on their tour bus after gigs.

It's just a game.

Nope. It's annoying to me. Why have "fun" playing a cheesy mock guitar "game" when I can actually play that stuff for real and enjoy that so much more.

To me, it's just for people that want to really play like that but never will, so they now have a cute game so they can "pretend".

Not to offend anyone that likes it, but to me it's for kids and wannabe guitar players so they feel better about themselves.

Almost like karaoke bums that call themselves real "singers".

No, see, it's for video game players. There's no "wannabee" component in this, it's not marketed to people who feel bad because they can't play a "real guitar" and need something to soothe their shattered souls. That's something that guitar players have created their own delusion about. See cartoon above.

Also, I work with a fair number of singers I first heard when they were performing karaoke, and they're not only pro/broadcast/jingle quality, but I bet you couldn't keep up with any of them on stage. I don't know where you got the concept that karaoke isn't singing... do you think there's some kind of Magic Dingus box that replaces the singer's voice, or that they're lip-synching or something?

It breaks me up that the people who have the snootiest, most self-righteous attitudes about these things are invariably people who play in horribly bad bands.... no insult to anyone here, since I haven't heard your bands. But the people I've known IRL who rant about GH and karaoke... it never fails. They play in some sweaty, half-baked bar band that struggles through "Freebird" and then tells you during the break how they really "nailed it" tonight.

'Don't do video games, personally.

But this one may get a couple folks intereseteed in playing for real. And if they do, oh, man, it probably is not a fun picture to see them looking at all those frets and strings and their poor fingers....

I'm glad you like games. So do I, and have since the first Atari's and Intellivisions were out. In fact, I actually design, code and produce video games in my position, and write music for them. I started playing video games back when I started playing guitar in fact. I've been in my share of local and national acts, written and recorded a number of times, some of which you might have heard, and I've been teaching music for the last 20yrs on the side, in addition to my spot as a creative lead for a major ad agency, who I also write music for, much of you is regularly on commercials and tv shows.

I could care less what you think or what you believe. The bottom line is, it's a dumb game for musicians to waste their time on. I've seen so many people in our lounge (and other places) that DO pretend that, and ARE wannabes, as well as many fans of that game in general. And yes, people that drink at the bar, to "compete" with each other in belching out lame renditions of cheesy pop songs with horribly recorded backing tracks are by no means real "singers". They're hobbyists that like to think they are. A few might actually have talent, but most talented pro singers (who I deal with all the time) laugh and cringe at the whole karaoke things, like most "real" guitarists laugh and look down on the whole guitar hero thing.

Elitists? Absolutely. Toys are toys, hobbies are hobbies. Let's acknowledge that.

dgonz, although I understand your point, I think you are being a bit too judgemental on those that play. Maybe you've come across people like that, but then I also know plenty of people in the industry that are guitarists and love this game. They play it on down time whilst on tour buses or before a gig. I mean look at the people endorsing it. People like Slash, who is a very good guitarist.

Sure it's your opinion, but I do think you're being harsh on those that play it. And I'm 31, and I love playing it because you have to put a fair bit of concentration into it, and that's good for brain training.

Plus its fun, and that's all it is to me. I do not in any way shape or form think this and real guitar playing should be compared and nor do I think it's a substitute for...

I guess what I am saying is, it's alright for you not to like it, but ease up a little on those that do - are they really spoiling your fun playing guitar?

I can totally understand your point of view, and respect that. It is a game, and it is - what it is. It's HUGELY popular for sure, so I'm definitely in the minority by not liking it.

For me, as a musician that's spent his whole life playing, it seems a bit silly to me, although I can certainly understand the appeal. And, from a game point of view, it's awesome - easy to play (at first), great songs, very social, etc.

Plus, the attitude of the last idiot got me fired up :)

No kidding, you produce game music? My son Noah is an animator for LucasArts (formerly EA, Pixar before that).... And you still find time to score games and national spots, all while working as creative lead at a major ad agency? Hey, my older son is at McCann right now, working on the Microsoft account.... maybe he knows you!

Give us a link to your website. Tell us which games titles and which spots we would have heard... I work in that business too, just not in such an exalted position.

I'm not an idiot.... I just don't understand why a big-time music producer like you sounds just like a pissed-off little high school guitar player, and why someone who supposedly works in the industry has this out-of-proportion disdain for the people who buy the games.

I'll restrain myself from continuing the name-calling.
