Another sad day indeed. Kinda selfish to think he would live forever.

Oh no!
It's incredible to think that he performed as late as last year, in his nineties.

He will definitely not be forgotten.

Yeah sorry to hear the news. We considered him to be a 'local' around my parts (Hudson Valley, NY). He leaves behind quite a legacy.

What's sad is that I bet it won't even take a week before the vultures in the record companies seize the opportunity to make money on his death by releasing Pete Seeger albums.

A true American icon.

Hope that banjo goes to the Smithsonian.

I saw his last performance at farm aid and it was spectacular, he will be missed.
I have audio engineered some of his shows with Toshi ( his wife who died not that long ago)
giving all the directions of how she wanted it to sound, fun stuff

The term "living legend" is often thrown around cheaply. Few labeled as such actually are. Pete Seeger however was a true living legend and one of the few "folkies" inducted into the R&R HOF. He's probably the only "Blacklisted" musician from the communist witch hunt of the 1950's in the R&R HOF. Speaking for myself, I view Pete Seeger as teaching Americans how to be better Americans through his music.

From his trek at age 19 with Alan Lomax across the USA to record diverse regional music styles that were evolving into folk, country and blues all the way to his last Farm Aid gig Seeger loved, understood and respected uniquely American music as deeply as anyone ever did.

Beyond the broad appeal of his own music, Seeger's stand on issues like labor rights, civil rights, human rights, the ecology movement, the plight of every mistreated minority and various anti-war movements made him an agent of societal change right up to the recent Occupy Wall Street movement. His stands which ran counter to big business but pro-worker and counter to the runaway military industrial complex but pro-peace carried so much import that his support made almost any counterculture movement instantly more mainstream.

Without his voice, his banjo, 12 string guitar and mandolin at countless rallies the America of today could actually be a very different place. Comparisons to Jimmie Rogers and his Almanac Singers band-mate Woody Guthrie are inescapable but Pete Seeger's impact on American society ultimately transcended those two icons with whom he is often associated. While the three collectively shaped the musical genre we now know as "Americana," Pete Seeger did more to shape the USA into what it is today than any musician in any genre ever. From the 1940's through the 2010's he was a force of change and courage such as the music world has not seen before.

Sadly we may never see a musician with such efficacy on societal ills again. Not that America is now perfect, but it surely is way better off after Pete Seeger than before him. Yes the Beatles and Michael Jackson and Carole King sold more records, but they didn't change life in the USA one iota, nor did they even want to do so as much as Pete Seeger did.

When subpoenaed to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee, Seeger asserted his First Amendment rights as follows: “I am not going to answer any questions as to my associations, my philosophical or my religious beliefs, or how I voted in any election or any of these private affairs. I think these are very improper questions for any American to be asked.”

Many people in the entertainment field were ruined for life at the McCarthy hearings. The film industry was hard hit. Even future president Ronald Regan (an actor then) and TV superstars Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz who owned Desilu studios along with many other famous film names were hauled in before the committee during the witch hunt.

As a result of Pete Seeger's Stonewalling the McCarthy "Inquisition" he was jailed and Seeger's long running group called The Weavers "blacklisted" which meant their concert dates were cancelled along with their lucrative Decca Records contract. While many people blacklisted in the McCarthy hearings never recovered, Seeger persevered and never wavered in his love of freedom and in the right of all Americans to stand up and be counted on the side of right over might. In 1959 he signed as a solo act at Columbia Records and began churning out songs that would be covered by others to become mega hits of the 1960's including "If I Had A Hammer" and "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" for Peter, Paul & Mary along with his "Turn, Turn, Turn" for the Byrds. He also recorded a cover himself, "We Shall Overcome" recorded live at Carnegie Hall sold over 500,000 albums for Columbia, which was a huge figure at that time and in fact would again be a huge figure right now. While he didn't write the song since it is based on a spiritual in the public domain, he did more to popularize the song than about anyone else.

This cat left marks all over America. And that to me is what earned him the right to be called a legend and beyond that a great American! We need more musicians like him really. Pete Seeger types don't come along often enough.

Pete Seeger was one of those special human beings.....
The one's that always cared more for the world at large than their own selves....
He will be missed, but certainly not forgotten....

I was fortunate to see him live many years ago when he sailed into Block Island on his sloop
" The Clearwater ". He played at the Empire Theater, a rustic theater which ironically still to this day is still full of character....
Ironically, his chef at the time Bob Nooney went on to become a good friend as we worked at the Atlantic Inn.... He now resides on the big Island enjoying Polo....

Thank You Pete for enriching my life at an early age.... 8) :D

I heard about this earlier. At least he had one hell of a run at 94. The one story that always sticks in my mind is about how he freaked out when Bob Dylan went electric at Newport.

Hey Mud, did you catch this new story? It would be cool to see a bridge named after a musician who did more than just play music. "the Tappan-Seeger bridge" :D

http://www.lohud.com/article/20140129/N ... -s-passing

Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner wrote, “If the Tappan Zee Bridge is named for Pete Seeger we will honor a man who led the fight for a cleaner river. And, we will be inspired whenever we cross the Hudson to think of ways to keep the river clean and beautiful.

“A world-class new bridge should be named for a world-class environmentalist who made our region a better place.”
