Just picked up this gem. It's the 1x15 version. Even came with cigarette burns and ripped tolex. WINNER!

So far, I'm very impressed by it. It doesn't quite have the lush Fender cleans, but then I'm not sure Peavey meant it to. There's something about it though that just has a killer blues mojo. There's a nastiness to it. The name fits it perfectly. You get the feeling you're in a swampy smoke filled bar when you play it. The 15" speaker is a little loose, great bass tones. I don't know what it is. It just has a voice that says "I'm gonna kick your $@!" to it when the cleans break up.

I tubed it with a couple Mullards and a Sylvania, busted out the hollowbody with Gibson Classics and dug into it. Nice amp. Very bluesy, colorful and versatile. There's an undeniable soulful feel to it.

I've Played out of many Delta Blues amps over the years, really nice amps. They're not meant to be a Fender or all that clean, but man they are seriously cool. I never bought one because I have enough amps already, but if the need ever arose, I'd have on in a heartbeat. Simple designs mean reliability in most cases. Congrats on a great score.

That sucks Bluesguy. Hopefully you'll get to try one out at some point. When you get the clean volume just at about 6 (it goes to 12) it starts to break up. It does have a nice clear clean tone up to that point. But then there's a monsterous sound that happens somewhere between 6-8 that is irresistible and addicting. More monsterous than the overdrive channel. It's an overdrive with a clean edge to it. Very hard to describe really. It's obviously power tube distortion. But it kept me playing for a couple hours. It's been a while since I haven't minded my ears ringing. It was totally worth it.

BIG Fan of my DB115 !! 8)

Image

Sounds great w/ one of my Teles (esp. the one w/ the EMGs) or my Heritage H-535 Semi-Hollowbody w/ Seth Lovers.

Image

Certainly NOT as clean as my Blackface Deluxe, but well on-par w/ my SS Princeton Reverb (2X10).

Built like a Tank... It has a 'Bluesy' vibe to it that Fender slightly lacks.

Plus that 15" Blue Marvel can really move a lot of air !

A true Spring Reverb is also a HUGE Plus !

The vinyl 'Tweed', IMHO, is just better looking Tolex.

Made in USA... right down in the Delta.

Frankly, I don't think Fender offers anything in the mid-price range that can touch it !

cheers!

Got mine out the door & shipped for $489 last April (a 'Tax' deal MF was running + discount coupon) - current retail is anywhere from $589-$650.

I've seen them used for around $300-$350... less if they've been ridden hard.

cheers!

See if he'll let you push that clean channel past 6. As soon as I heard that, I knew I had a keeper.

From what I gather, this is the same circuit as the Classic 30- just with tremolo, and different speaker options.

Nobody has these around me... ( THREE Peavey dealers, too.) I have tried- and loved- the classic 30. Gorgeous sound! I especially like it with a Gibson guitar- P90's and buckers sound great through it. That crunch when you push it is just fantastic. Makes me want to play and play and play. They take drive pedals like a champ, too- a necessity for me as an apartment dweller, These amps are LOUD! I didn't dare push the ones I tried to 6- it likely would have blown me off my stool. On the lead channel, there is a surprising amount of gain- you can make this amp scream!

Th only downfall of the C30 is that apparently it's a pita to work on.

I may just have to bite the bullet, and order one. I hate doing that- I want to try before I buy.

Thank's , with your suggestions and the demo's on you tube I have an idea where to twist the dials when I try it out .

I've not heard much bad about these amps .

It will be a welcome addition to the collection.

The Classic 30 and the Delta Blues circuits are identical...almost.

On the Delta Blues, there is an added tremolo circuit. The only alteration to the circuit path in the DB is Peavey inserted an LDR for the tremolo to control and changed a resistor to accommodate that. Away from the signal path is the tremolo oscillator circuit with its two controls.

Peavey Classic 30 Schematic

Peavey Delta Blues Schematic

The Delta Blues has a different, larger cabinet and two speaker options: 210 or 115. It does sound very different from the Classic 30 primarily for that reason.

The DB 210 is much closer to the Classic 30 than the DB115.

The Delta Blues 115 definitely wins over the Classic 30 on Tone. The Delta Blues' 15-inch Blue Marvel speaker (proprietary design built by Emminence in KY) has more Bottom end, greater Mids (where a lot of Blues comes from) and a tighter, smoother Top end. The Classic 30 could be defined as having more Gain, maybe slightly more adept for Hard Rock. The Classic 30 is a good amp, but Tone-wise the Delta Blues is superior.

Both take pedals very well too.

Neither one is particularly difficult to work on, though certainly not as easy as a hand-wired, point-to-point (try finding one at this Price Point). Plus, there are lots of available Mods for the Delta Blues (particularly at the Blue Guitar) for those wanting a more 'Custom' sound.

Trying before you buy is always a good Philosophy, but not always practical. One thing about Internet Amp Reviews is that they almost always fall into two catagories:

Those who Love them... Those who Hate them...

Search the Web yourself and you'll find not too many Haters out there for this Amp.

You'll find much greater division about the Fender Hot Rods than these amps.

See a Peavey Demo here:

cheers!

Oh yeah- I've watched every demo I can find of the DB. No need to convince me!

Of those three: C30 db 1x15, DB 2x10, which has the most controllable volume? I've tried the C30 several times, and love the tones. I can keep the overall volume under control- barely- by NOT pushing the clean channel, and using the lead ch for any amp based gain. I'm concerned that the greater amount of air pushed by a 15" speaker or two 10" drivers would make that impossible.

Of course, the closest I've come to using single coils through it was a 50's Tribute gold top LP with P90's! The neck P100 in my Schecter sounded so good on it's own, I forgot all about the Plimsoul I was supposedly demo-ing...

It's kind of interesting how they designed the clean channel to reach it's max volume quickly, so it could get a goodly amount of natural overdrive. The Lead channel is actually quieter! The pot taper is much more gradual, allowing for a slower increase in sound level. But, hey- that's why I have dirt pedals, right?

Gotta love that sweet Tweed look, too!
