Well, I finally built a Tele. I've played the a lot in the past, owned one way back and sold it, but I wanted something special that I screwed together and finished myself besides a cigar box guitar. Anyway, everything came from Stewmac, a knotty pine body, Mighty Mite neck with a rosewood board, Gotoh tuners, CTS pots, Orange Drop tone cap, Switchcraft Jack, four way switch and Golden Age pickups cloth wire and full copper shielding in all cavities. I went with the old style bridge with brass saddles. Really nice chime and sustain for days. It's quiet as a mouse and sounds awesome. The four way switch is a nice mod. You have the normal settings plus both pups in series. It gives you a really nice, fat, volume boost.

So all the comments that knotty pine isn't a good tone wood never played a guitar made out of it, and those Stewmac Tele pups are great sounding pickups. Also the four way switch doesn't have all the noise I've read about either. All you have to do is snip the pickup cover ground and run a new ground to the volume pot.

Anyway, it was a fun project that ran me about $550 and sounds better to me than any of the Mexican Tele's I've tried and seems on par with the American series. The neck plays well but it had some sharp fret ends that I had to finish. All in all not bad for a $100 neck. I had a photo setup left over so I put it to use.

Cool!
I've not heard of a knotty pine body before but it sure looks interesting.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Hi 63: great job!

You'll hear no complaints about the knotty pine from me, I think those bodies are super tasty! You appear to have given it a sort of worn denim stain - care to tell us about that? What product did you use?

I think the Switchcraft jack is an absolute must on a Tele. One of the few things seriously iffy about original Teles is their output socket.

Interesting to hear what you say about the Golden Age pickups and the four-way switch. I have no experience with either of those, but I bet I put that selector switch on my next home-built Tele.

Altogether, very cool. Congrats, and enjoy that guitar! :)

Cheers - C

Check out the pictures tab. Stew-Mac have been doing them for a couple of years or so. Very interesting!

Thanks for the kind words Ceri,
The color is just a blue stain from Stewmac. I did a little sanding then used three coats of stain and finished with a couple light coats of nitro. I want it to wear so I didn't get real crazy with it.
The jack cup is a little different. It's an Electrosocket Jack Mount. It's held in place with two wood screws and it's threaded so the jack screws right into it without the outside nut.

All in all a really fun great sounding guitar.

Yep, that's the one - Electrosocket. Do you also notice the shape means the tip of the lead just finds its way into the socket a bit easier when you're doing it without looking, on a dark stage or whatever? And none of that pain getting the socket installed that you have with the original ones. A small but genuine upgrade.

Cheers - C

That is cooler than cool! Congrats!

Making me itch to do the same thing...with a few tweaks, of course!

Gotta tweak it for sure. I wish they had a Strat body with knotty pine an maybe routs for a single coil, P-90 and a humbucker.

I just got a couple of 12" Cohiba cigar boxes in today as well as a humbucker from GFS and some other stuff. Here we go again.

Bob very cool. I love that body it has a lot of character. How do you like the mighty mite neck. I used one when I built my esquire and love it.

Nice looking guitar, every guitarist should own a Telecaster.

Those Mighty Mite necks are pretty good for the money, I've had a couple of partscasters with those necks and they were nicely made, good thick slab fingerboards and really stable. And the Electrosocket is a must, FMIC should start bulk buying those and fit them as standard.

Tim, I like the neck. It had some sharp fret ends, but a little touch up with a fret file fixed that. It plays and feels really nice. Wasn't a lot of cash either.
