Happy Monday, forum fans:

What better way to start off the week than with our recent upgrade to our line of classic four-stringed electric mandolins, the Mando-Strat® 8 mandolin?

This eight-string mandolin has a truly classic ’50s and ’60s vibe, from the Villager™ headstock with vintage-style tuners to the vintage-style bridge with threaded steel saddles. But it also offers features for the modern player, including a specially designed pickup for clear and articulate tone.

Check it out and let us know what else you'd like to see! Thanks!

Surely, the 8-string mandolin is the classic, it just was not offered by Fender lately.

Anyhow, good to see - I welcome Fender branching out to more instruments.
Can we hope for an acoustic-electric banjo too?

What can you tell us about the pickup? I don't see anything about it in the specs--not that I know anything about electric mandolin pickups...

After I find fretless bass I like & can afford I will be looking into getting a mandolin, an additional small amp and a mic or two.

So this does appeal to me to check it out.

I just can't imagine that the tiny amount of prospective consumers for an all-electric mandolin could warrant the mass production of this. How many mandolin players want a mandolin that cannot be played at all sans amp? This is kind of like those hard rock electric violins that nobody whatsoever bought except members of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra!

One benefit of an all-electric is that you can practice with headphones without waking or irritating others. For those of us who have families, that can be a strong selling point.

And your argument is self-defeating, because you could say the same about solidbody guitars back in the 1950s.

Whoa! Everybody stand back--the world is about to come to an end!

I AGREE 100% WITH SOMETHING ARTH1 POSTED!!

By TigerJ's logic, we should/would all be playing hollow body acoustic/electrics.

I would buy this product, just for the ability to play at high volume without feedback issues or the necessity to stand perfectly still in one place (in front of a microphone)...

I often play my solidbody electrics without an amp--you can hear it.
Not with a group of people or other stuff--but you can hear it
Same thing with this.

YES!

I held off buying the 4-string version because I always liked traditional 8-string mandolins more. Not sure I'll be able to keep my credit card in my pocket for this one though. Although a few custom colours would be nice!

8-string mandolins have an advantage which is different from 12- versus 6-string guitars: Because the mandolin is so short, it has very little sustain. To keep a tone playing, you re-pick one string while the other is still ringing, then alternate again. That's what gives that unique mandolin sound, and a 4-string is, in my opinion, just a fancy Uke tuned in fifths.

So this was needed. Thanks, Fender!

Pretty cool. Roots and Americana music are coming back in a big way. I think you're going to see a lot more mainstream artists leaning this direction. (it's already been happening in country, rock and pop) So I think as that trend likely continues you'll also see it trickle down to the cover bands and the like. For the more die hard roots musicians an all electric mando may be something they turn their noses up at. The same way the clowns who play bluegrass do to a P, or any other electric bass.

However, to those who like to bring in touches of those sounds to their more robust electric arrangements increase. I think you might see a market for this kind of thing increase as well. As others point out. If you had told violinists and fiddlers 60 years ago that there would be a market for electric and acoustic/electric violins they'd have probably chased you out of town with torches and pitchforks. Yet. Here we are.
