I still faithfully use CRT TV's in the house and they have never given me trouble. My monitor is an IBM P76. and also the nice thing about CRT's is that they have better grays and other colors. Flat screens seem too washed out.

I use a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro monitor with a hood shade for photo work, when color is important. There are some colors that LCDs cannot display - even the "100% color gamut" ones cannot match certain pantone colors. Especially the warmer yellows are completely missing. Also when I need higher resolution - the LCDs are limited, and you have to get a huuuge LCD monitor to see a 2048x1536 image in full resolution. Which my 19" CRT does no problem.
So yeah, it's my second monitor on my desktop, and isn't going anywhere.

Otherwise, LCD monitors are superior. 1600x1200, because I don't like wide screen for photo and design work, and the extra vertical pixels come in handy.

Since we have regular power outages I have replaced our AC TVs with propane and kerosene powered models.

DIF "Do I fxxx

Accepting the possibility that colour is better represented on a good quality CRT monitor?? Is it? Where photo processing is important (and yep I do shoot a HQ DSLR in jpg and RAW) then one of life's improvements is the fact that tv wise i shall never again have to slide and drag a heavy CRT television across the carpet when its time to change.

Bless flat screen TV's. Better IQ and a fraction of the weight and size.

Cheers ..... Al

No, it isn't - a well calibrated LCD has a better color gamut representation.
However, there are colors that LCDs cannot produce, that's well within the visible spectrum. The yellow used by McDonald's on their boxes, for example. You won't ever be able to match that color on the LCD displays today - to get an approximation, you would need a negative blue.
On a high quality phosphorous CRT, you can work with edge colors like that.

Black is another color that (high quality) CRTs match better. You can get perceptual black on an LCD, but it's still pretty bright grey.

This is why I use both. A good quality LCD for the maority of work, and a CRT for checking the brightest colors and to blow up a picture full-screen in a softer way without visible scaling artifacts.

Old TVs actually are more efficient than flat panels. because our bill was $25 more when we got our flat screen. So I smashed it and replaced it with a faithful CRT :)

Depends on the age of the flat screens, older ones, especially plasmas were awful but the new models, especially the LED flatscreens are extremely economical.

The new ones are far more economical than a CRT.

CRT monitors are dangerous, I no longer use them.

All my computers are connected to flat LCD monitors exclusively.

CRT's are bad for the environment (comparatively) and cost a lot more on your electric bill. Look for second hand LCD screens on craigslist in your area, they're easy to come by. Any small advantage CRT's have over LCD as far as representing color is far outweighed (IMO) by the picture clarity of a well calibrated LCD monitor. And I just don't see any 'mojo' to be had there.

The annoying thing about LCD displays is the viewing angle. Some are better than others but depending on where you are sitting, you will likely see shifts in the color, tint, contrast etc. Plasma's don't do this which is why we use them in the Color Correction rooms. Otherwise you could be adjusting color based on what your seeing, roll your chair a bit to the left or right and your work looks different... or what you're doing looks different to someone else sitting elsewhere in the room.

I don't know I'd rather have a CRT for a few things. like a retro gaming TV or a old VHS TV. but the bad thing about LCD's is that every time you move your eyes this purple thing comes into your eye.
