Hi, I want to adjust my truss so the action is a little higher, and I found that I couldn't adjust it because it looks the previous owner snapped of the allen key inside the nut. Is this fixable?

I would think that you could just drill a bit into the piece of the wrench and pull it out easily enough. Now, whether there was any damage to the guitar remains to be seen. I have my fingers crossed for you.

That take some serious force to snap off am Allen key. Drilling into and Allen key is very hard due to the hardness of the material. I would let a pro take on this project. Maybe try to lightly tap on the piece of Allen key with a punch to try and loosen it. It should fall out if you can loosen it. Good luck

Did you try turning it off and then back on again?

Hello HardRockLover. Two things. First, like tbazzone says, allen keys are usually (not always) made from hard steel and it's something to turn one so aggressively that it snaps, especially just the short section left inside the nut. I'd be fascinated to see a nice detailed photo of that, if you cared to post it, so's we can better assess the situation and suggest the right fix.

Second, if you're using the trussrod to adjust action you're doing the wrong thing. Action is adjusted with saddle height. Trussrods are only for relief. People get into all kinds of set-up problems by confusing the two.

Cheers - C

In regards to the hardened steel aspect of the wrench. Use a carbide bit. It's that simple. That's what they are made for. Simply get the right tool to do the job. Just find one small enough.

Whew, the truss rod didn't actually snap!

It must not have been a high quality tool if it broke off.

What guitar model is this you are asking about?

My guess is the key hole in the nut is striped and and hex key just turns in it. If thats the case you may be able to remove it with a tapered extractor.
Cant tell by that pic.
