Hi, I found a really nice Jackson I might want to get, but it has Seymour Duncan pickups. I prefer EMG's, but I have never tried Seymour Duncans, so I don't know if I would perfer them better or the EMG's. Please give me your options on which is better.

I guess it all boils down to the type of tone that you're looking for,I have tried both but I prefer Duncans by far-at least the models in 2 of my guitars- because they give me a really full clean tone yet they can give me a really nice dirty growl when really driven hard.I found the EMGs that I have tried so far to be a bit too raw and more close to a heavy metal raunch for my liking when overdriven, whereas I like a more PAF type overdrive like the Duncans have.

I haven't been impressed with the active EMGs I've tried. Too much treble and not enough boom or cut-through midrange. It's like bringing a razor blade to an axe fight.
I think they have their uses, but as I'm primarily a blues, death and punk guy (yes, strange combo, I know), I don't see them as all that useful for me.

Seymour Duncan has both good and bad pickups. I like their hotter stuff - I can't praise the Black Winter ones too much. Some like their PAF-like pickups, but for those, I think Gibson, Lindy Fralin and Lollar do them better.

What neither SD nor EMG does well is an equivalent to Seth Lover's Wide Range Humbcker. Neither does Fender, by the way.
