I am straddling the fence on this one.

I haven't touched my G&Ls (with the exception of Schaller Straplock buttons), due to the fact that they're both rare/unique guitars. The first electric I ever owned (and still own) is a 1980 G&L F-100. It's got a somewhat unique set of features (Series II neck profile, rosewood fretboard, non-trem hard tail bridge, sunburst finish [most were solid colors]) and it's from the first year of the company. The other G&L I own is a 1983 Nighthawk, one of 246 made. Neither of these will ever be modded.

However, I have no problem modding a non-vintage, non-collectible or non-rare guitar...I have l modified both my Telecaster (pickups, switching, pickguard) and Stratocaster (pickups, switching, blocked tremolo, pickguard, pickup covers, knobs, etc.).

I generally won't make an inreversible (inreversible? Unreversible?) mod, but if I had a cheap guitar that I liked the neck and body but it needed some major changes to make it "mine," I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I think the word you're looking for is "irreversible". :)

I know, it's called "comedic irony plus intentional ignorance," a la Steve Martin...

I've never really done mods except strap locks and the locking nut on my '86 MIJ Strat. I put a sting tree on it to make it look like the top o' the line Strats of the day . . . and there weren't that many new American-made Strats back in 1986. But I still have all of the parts . . .

My MIA Strat = Stock
My MIM Strat = new pickups (hated ice pick of the ceramics), and Callaham tremolo block and bridge assembly
Me = totally happy with both

My MIA Strat = ^this
My MIM Strat = same with the pickups, but I did not change the tremolo block or bridge. Also I put in a larger capacitor.
My Blacktop Jaguar = changed pots, cap, toggle switch, some wires, left everything else. Always considering new pickups but I'm not sure if I'm crazy enough about the rest of the guitar to sink more money in.

I do love my new American Deluxe Strat and the better part of me is fighting to keep it stock but the modder every once in a while will beg to put some Duncan SSLs in there.

The most common "mod" that I do to a Fender guitar is cosmetic, changing out the pickguard. I have a pearloid fetish that I have trouble controlling. And changing the pickguard usually means changing the pickups in that I generally swap in a loaded pickguard and bag the original.

As far as my non-Fender guitars, I tend to leave them as is, just the way I bought them, whether is was new or used. I liked the way they sounded and looked or I wouldn't have bought them.

I dont have any problem with folks modding their guitars ...heck its Their guitar they have every right to do with what they wish if the end result pleases them.
Though I am somehwat bemused by some of the boards that deal with Fender(and I certainly dont just mean this one.) where the uninitiated might get the impression that Fender doesnt make a guitar that is a playable instrument without two grand of after market upgrades.
I cant count the times Ive seen post where some poor fool is simply trying to find out if say a Standard Fender Strat would be a playable electric for his child that is just begining.
Or some kid who after God knows what ordeals and trials is finally able to scrape together the cash for one and is excited to share the news that he too will now own a Real Fender.
The reponses usually go like this: "Well...I Love mine.
Of course right after I got it I tore out ever single bit of electronics in it ,pickups, pots switch, ect. threw them away and ordered (fill in $800 worth of boutique replacements here ).
Then I tore out the block and bridge and replaced them with Calaham upgrades.
I realized it also needed a neck as big around as my leg with 1/2" high Bass Frets(After reading the Forums I was afraid I would 'Fret-Out' if I didnt put those on!) so just I took the original neck off threw it away and ordered a new one from Warmouth with a Meteorite Dust/Resin Composite Nut.
Striped the finish off the body and had it resprayed with Nitro so my ax could 'breathe'.
Then I took that Body off and threw it away too and bought a replacement that was reportedly made with tone-wood from Noah's Ark off Ebay that was lighter...it only weighs a pound and a half!
But to answer your question: yes by all means a Fender Standard Strat is a Great guitar!"
Speaking of stock I think the only time in my life I got multiple compliments from non guitarists because I "sounded so good" was when I played a set in Church backing up a vocalist and for the fun of it I used one of those strats that come in those 'Strat-Packs' you can get at Costco that belonged to a 14 year old kid who also went there and was just starting.
I plugged it into my Fender Twin which probably had alot to do with it, but the instrument was certainly acceptable tone and playabilty wise.
I had given it a decent set up but that was it.

I think Robbie Robertson of The Band has the most interesting mod on a Stratocaster, with it being dipped in metal.

Modding any U.S. or MIM Fender(except for the black label "Traditional Series") is just bad manners.

I've modded every single electric guitar I own in one way or another. The least modded guitar I have is a Schecter Tempest Custom. Swapped the tone cap. Nothing else needed.
