I know it goes without saying that a lot of people like to mod their guitars. That's fine. What I've learned over the years: Often times there's reasons manufacturers choose specific parts and electronics for any given model. I've certainly found this the case to be with Fender.

Other than some bridge saddles on a Strat, every time I've tried to mod a Fender....especially the pickups....I end up reverting it back to its stock configuration.

What's your take on this?

I went through a phase of trying lots of replacement pickups, that just turns into an endless black hole to throw money into. Now I'm not really a fan of endless customisations, I'd rather take a stock guitar and adapt my playing to find out where the good sounds are in that guitar.

I'm with you on this one. If I like a guitar, that's it .. no modifications whatsoever. :D

The Fender bass bridge was never Leo's best design. I replaced mine with a BAII. Now Fender bought the rights to Leo Quan and are putting out high mass bridges just like the BAII with the Fender name on it. They make great stuff, just not every component.

+1, pfox14. I've changed two of my Squire p-bass bridges for Wilkinsons, but I have noticed if you use knurled saddles with the stock bridge it is the perfect weight.

All the guitars I bought new have stayed stock.

Except the output socket and saddles on my Tele. O-o-o-obviously those had to change.

Cheers - C

I was also buying into I should buy different pickups for my american Fat Strat. Some people said they didnt like the sound of those pickups. Almost bought some dimarzio's. So I change my brand of strings to DR pure blues strings. Love the sound of my strat, just wished it had 3 single coils....

i rarely mod anything, i figure the folks at Fender know a heck of a lot more than me about what makes their guitars sound great. I have done some extreme modding (ok, not like THAT extreme) on some cheaper stuff but the quality guitars i leave alone, perfect as is.

I've actually modded quite a few guitars. Out of all the guitars I've modded, this one was the most successful.

Image

Most of the parts came from my drawer...off of mods I had done to other guitars. The ESP M-50 was a really decent platform (I bought it used for a 100 dollars with a HSC so if it got jacked up...no harm/no foul).

On Fenders...Mostly Strats...they always get reverted back.

When I had Gibsons early on I modded the hell out of them. I also did that with some Epiphones I owned before selling them off. And, the off-brand stuff.

It was AFTER going through all of this (and picking up Fenders again) that I realized...hell with it...if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Except for refinishing my 1965 Mustang-which I did to resurrect it from a very poor previous amateur attempt of refinishing by a previous owner who had roughly sanded off the original finish and slopped on cheap varnish with an old brush-I have left all my guitars stock.I did however put a set of Craig Vineham Sweet V-59 PAFs in my 3 pup Epi SG bodied '61 Les Paul Custom Reissue so it would sound like a PAF equipped '61 also.

When I go looking for a guitar,I won't buy a guitar unless I like everything about it rather than to go and buy it and then incur extra expense fixing it up until it's the way I want it to be-even though I am quite capable of doing such work.Basically if the guitar isn't to my liking in all categories,it stays in the store.

BTW,I decided to change the '61 Les Paul Custom pickups because Vinehams weren't being made when I bought it and when I heard for myself that the actually sounded identical to the best of the PAF pickups,I had to get them for the sake of authenticity.

I don't know. It depends on the bass and what I'm using it for. I generally keep at least 2 P basses. One with flats dead stock. (expect strap locks) Then one with rounds for harder music. I will generally switch to a BAII for a bridge. The exception being a P bass that comes with the threaded saddle bridge. The 70's style bridge is fine for flats, but I find it doesn't give me the sustain I like for hard rock.

Now with my 51RI when I had it I assumed that I would want to replace the two saddle bridge, or upgrade to a Single Coil 1/4lber. Turns out I gigged that bass for years and never changed a thing other than putting the chrome covers on it.

It all depends on what equipment it comes with and what I happen to be playing in whatever band I'm in at the time.

When I buy a guitar I choose it for it's features , the way it feels and sounds. Appearance is not as important but if the instrument is an attractive colour it can draw my attention , I may take it off the rack and look closer.
Modding guitars is not something I've done lot of and certainly not something I'd do to a guitar I just picked out new at the music store and brought home. I've owned nearly twenty , three quarters of those I bought new.
I'd like to "fix up" a guitar but it would have to need work to begin with , as in , let's say I found a deal on a used instrument that I thought I could improve on or maybe it needs some repairs , then , yes I'd mod that one .

Mod a new guitar ? nope , isn't gonna happen .

I like regular stock guitars(Fender, Gibson), but as far as bass goes..the more high end the better.
