Three months? I've actually gone five years before. I guess I just couldn't be arsed to change them at the time. I'm a lot better about such things these days. Speaking of Ernie Balls, I happen to like the Slinky 10s for my guitars. They have a 3 pack special for them at AMS, which is a pretty good deal. For my basses, it's just Rotosound flats.

I used to have a huge issue with strings not even lasting me 2 weeks. Corrosive sweat or something. I'm really anal about having fresh strings so I moved over from EB to elixirs. Those strings lasted me 3 months, no issues. They are going on all of my guitars now. Although its still rotosounds for bass, I'm thinking of giving their bass strings a try.

For acoustic bronze strings, yeah, they corrode. But good steel strings don't give me that problem.

For me, it's the string stretch that kills them. Usually within a couple of weeks of playing, or a couple of months of not playing.
If I've had to re-tune a few times due to string stretch, the crease in the strings from the bridge saddles move into the playable area - even if it's just 1/32", and the strings sound duller. Similar with creases from the frets, if doing a lot of hammer-ons or vibrato.

Contrary to what others say, thick strings also seem to last shorter than thin strings for me. It could be because thick strings are under higher constant pressure, but also because with thinner strings, the creases get stretched out more, and have less impact.

But anyhow, strings are relatively cheap. I pay more in electricity for my practice amp, not to say anything about gasoline money. It's not where I would look first to save money.
