If nothing wrong with that Lp I would have no problem with that trade.

Wow you sure made a tuff call. I am not sure you got the best of the deal, as they ain't making '81 Strats anymore,

Some of us would say that's not such a bad thing - there were some less than stellar guitars near the end of the CBS era.
The only Fender from the 80s I'm really GASing for is the Katana.

Yeah, the early '80s was the absolute low point, but that doesn't mean they were all junk.
I wouldn't turn one down.

I'd have to sell the Les Paul and buy a couple new American Standard Strats.

That would have been really tough call for me, they're both so sweet! The strat is probably more versatile, but one thing it won't do is sound like a Les Paul, and you mentioned you have other strats.
I think you did the right thing, especially since that Gibson is 2nd hand, so no more money was handed to the evil corporation. Enjoy it, I'd love to see a little youtube demo of the 'Paul.

Any trade whereby you lose a Strat it a bad trade.

Not if you're not a Strat guy, nor if you have more than one.

I'm not particularly a Strat guy, and late '70s/early '80s Fenders don't necessarily have the cachet that earlier Fenders do, so if the OP wanted a Paul, it was a good deal.

WOW!!!

Well, it was a very long drive (12 hours bouncing down the 5 in my little truck  )but worth it… the guitar is KILLER! He dug out one of those little Fender woody amps for me to try it out with. The humbuckers are HUGE sounding and very rich and the coil split sounds convincingly tele. That little amp was amazing, as is the guitar.

Upon getting home with it I removed all the hardware and gave it a good clean and polish. These Traditional Pro IIs have a finish on the back similar to the HWY1s, a duller matte finish which does nothing for me. Unlike my repeated attempts to buff the HWY1s to a shine and not get that orange peel effect, the Gibson's matte finish polishes to a very glossy and smooth finish… very nice indeed. it looks like a whole new guitar with the cherry back gleaming as bright as the front.
The locking Grovers are killer and maintain a rather vintage look which also appeals to me. I've ordered some "thumb cutters" and gold reflector knobs w/silver inserts (like the 70's LPs featured) which I think will look killer. The owner has already installed amber speed knobs but had the original gold knobs in the case. He had also replaced the plain truss rod cover with a "standard" cover and installed strap locks… almost a necessity for a 10 lb. Les Paul.

Once the sun comes up I'll get a few pictures up and posted and no doubt end up making a new jam video too… Best of all, he seemed as stoked to get the Strat as I was to get the LP. I guess that's the beauty of a good trade! :D

Looking forward to it!
Arguing about which one is better is, in my opinion, pointless. Just like I like steak, and I like chicken, I would not want to have to restrict myself or anyone else to either. Even if I most of the time play my teles, sometimes I want to play my Gibsons, so I do, and enjoy it very much.
Gibson makes excellent guitars, and so does Fender. A good LP is a nice thing to have, so congratulations!
