I've had a wild hair to get a Les Paul lately… I couldn't really afford it so decided to trade my '81 Strat for one a guy was trying to sell. He just so happens to be a Strat guy and so it looks to be working out perfect for both of us.

Just out of curiosity, what do you all think about this trade? I'm happy which is really all that matters I guess...

SSSS not what we think, if this satisfies your jonesing for a LP then it was a good deal.

Good deal, as long as the Gibson's headstock hasn't been broken or cracked. That Strat was nice too, though.

Any trade whereby you lose a Strat it a bad trade.

You wanted an LP, and he wanted a strat. You both got a good specimen of what you wanted, so it seems like a great trade for both of you.

Everyone should try each of the four major solidbodies at least for a while - Tele, Strat, LP and SG. They're all great guitars with their own personalities. And I hope that Gibson and Fender never ever will merge - the competition between the two is a good thing for us players.

Agreed! x100

But I thought LPs were hollow bodies, I am confused?

 I figured someone would think so… but I have 5 others and the '81 was an impulse buy. I thought I'd just stash it away and sell it down the road.

I agree with the comment about the "4 classics". The strat, tele, SG, and LP are legendary solid body models. I love my SGs and play them as regularly as my strats. This being my first real LP we'll see how I like it. It's non weight relieved so will probably be as heavy as the '81 strat. Actually the '81 was 8.6 lbs and this LP is close to 10. This LP is one of the models with coil splitting so it'll be a bit more versatile… I'll keep you all posted. I'm off to pick it up Sunday.

Technically, there are no hollow body Les Pauls. At least not what we think of as hollow bodies, with f-holes. Some are chambered, some are "weight relieved" (with drilled holes that don't add noticable resonance, like chambered does), but most of them are solid body. Thus the relatively high weight.

My goto guitar for the time being is my SG. It's not the best sounding or best playing - that's one of my teles - but it's so incredibly versatile. And the old LP just sounds great. All good guitars, just like Fenders are.
(I got burned on an Epiphone once, though, so I reserve the praise for Gibsons)

A Les Paul Standard is a great guitar.

I'd be happy with that tradeoff.

I wish I had a Les Paul to give for that strat.

Wow you sure made a tuff call. I am not sure you got the best of the deal, as they ain't making '81 Strats anymore, and they are still making that model Les Paul...but that is one pretty Les Paul, so as long as your happy and so is he, it's all good.

Since you already have other Strats no mortal sin has been committed...lol.Even though I am and have always been a die-hard Fenderphile,I really appreciate the sounds of other guitars from other manufacturers.Brand loyality is all well and good but brand snobbery is just plain silly and just is for those suffering from OCD as far as I'm concerned.I have 2 Epi Les Pauls and I really love the sound of a good humbucking pickup-I absolutely see nothing wrong with you trading a Strat for a Les Paul, plus 80s era Strats aren't really high up on the incredibly desirable list for collector guitars.

You are the only one who should have a say on what you do with your gear and a Les Paul is a great guitar to have in your stable because there are songs that just don't sound right when played on a Strat and are better suited for a Les Paul and vice versa.Enjoy your new guitar,it will open up a whole new spectrum of tones for you.

Some of us would say that's not such a bad thing - there were some less than stellar guitars near the end of the CBS era.
The only Fender from the 80s I'm really GASing for is the Katana.
