Well if they've made as many as I think they have-- where are they??? Everyone in the US should have around 10 and a couple more in parts!

They must be in closets. I have had a hard time finding used stuff.

No, I think everyone must be a closet guitarist, embracing their inner Peter Townshend, because I see plenty of used stuff, all in horrible shape. Either the top of the fretboard and frets are chewed up from cowboy chords, or the axes have had a secret career as cricket bats and hockey sticks. Or it has rusted in a closet, literally.
Something that's been taken good care of is what's hard finding.

I agree- not everyone takes good care of their stuff. Most of the used stuff I get I end up taking apart and cleaning from stem to stern. I oil a lot of rosewood boards. I don't think any one has heard of that sometimes. I could go on about how crud infested some of the used Fenders and others I've had were when I got them--- but I won't.

I mean based on the neck plate serial numbers alone, its it quite literally 400,000 guitars up to 1969?

The serial numbers do provide a rough idea of production through the '70s.
Fender used one range of numbers beginning in the mid-50s, the numbers of guitars it doesn't cover is relatively small.

There were some duplicates (like the "dashed" serial numbers) and the use of "L" when they got to one hundred thousand.

The Fender serial number expert is James Werner.
