I mean based on the neck plate serial numbers alone, its it quite literally 400,000 guitars up to 1969?

It is "not " a lot of guitar IMO

Roughly ;

1954 to 1969 = 15 years = 26,000 guitars / years = 500 guitars/ week =10 guitars /day for 5 days week

You lost a zero, that's 100 guitars a day.

You're assuming that the serial numbers are sequential. Can you substantiate that?

Besides that merely translates to 102 guitars/day.

And... for which guitars? Stratocasters?

Fender was also making Telecasters, Esquires and others.

Then there are the Basses, the Amplifiers, etc.

Also, that production figure is not likely to be linear, it's just an average. It's likely that fewer were produced daily in the early years and more that latter years of your defined period.

I'm not sure that total production numbers like this have a lot of meaning.

cheers!

We talk about 1954 to 1960 only
Serial number are for every guitar model and bass IMO ,
You won't find a Telecaster and Strat or ....with same serial number

No, but there are also likely to be serial numbers for which there were no guitar.

So the real number is going to be less than 400k - how much less is hard to say.

Watch out----the guys are coming soon who will ask "why do you even care?" They kind of got upset the last time I asked "how many guitars has Fender made?" They piled on for sure like I was some kind of dumbass for asking.

How Many Guitars Has Fender Made ???? I would say more than 2 million. Okay I'm ready- I have my helmet on.

Well if they've made as many as I think they have-- where are they??? Everyone in the US should have around 10 and a couple more in parts!

They must be in closets. I have had a hard time finding used stuff.

No, I think everyone must be a closet guitarist, embracing their inner Peter Townshend, because I see plenty of used stuff, all in horrible shape. Either the top of the fretboard and frets are chewed up from cowboy chords, or the axes have had a secret career as cricket bats and hockey sticks. Or it has rusted in a closet, literally.
Something that's been taken good care of is what's hard finding.
