I'm primarily a Fender guy with a couple of Strats and one Tele plus a mix of other acoustics and electrics. My original Strat is a 1964 Sunburst in great condition (still :D ) that my parents bought brand new for me for my birthday - yes, blessed to be the original owner with all docs and OHSC and Deluxe Amp to go along with it. Thanks Mom & Dad, love you, rest in peace.

I'm in the mood for the purchase of another vintage instrument and wanted to get opinions on what would be a great investment-grade player electric guitar would fit that bill. A Fender would be great but open to other suggestions as well. My budget is approx $3,500.

Also, any thoughts on storing and perserving vintage guitars would be appreciated too.

Thanks everyone in advance for your thoughts! Cheers!

I doubt you'll find anything pre-cbs with that amount of cash. I'd maybe look into the Fender Custom Shop with that $3,500.

Congrats on keeping ahold of that '64 Stratocaster.

+1

The under-capitalized budget is somewhat meager but '60s-era Mustangs and Duo-Sonics are still sanely priced. You might also look into an early 70's Strat, Jag, or Jazzmaster.

Sadly, the above posts are accurate. If you want real vintage with a pretty sure future value, you won't be able to get in at your budget. I would agree that a nice Custom Shop guitar might be your best bet. It will be a great guitar to own, will hold it's value and probably appreciate a little better than a production model. If you hang onto it long enough it will become vintage like your Strat.
I have a Guild Starfire that my parents bought new for me in either '66 or '67. I can't seem to remember which for sure. I still have it and it's in great shape. I've done nothing special except keep it in its OHSC. I used to take it with me everywhere and the case is pretty beat up. It still has a Panamerican Airlines tag on it. I have the original hang tag also. Good stuff.

I had someone over the other night that had a 68 jazz master that was incredible. He was playing it through my Princeton amp and it was beautiful. Now he want to buy my amp. I know you can find good deals on them.

I've seen some nice 70s strats under 2 grand, but I've seen some gibson rd customs for about 15 hundred, and those are really cool vintage guitars.
The gibson l6s is a pretty interesting guitar too.
So I think there are some pretty cool things under the radar, just have to find out about them.

Musicmaster or Duo Sonic.

They pop up on the cheap (relatively) regularly.

(See my signature as well)
