Im going to be pulling the trigger soon on another Strat and I love the classic Oly White but what has always stopped me before is that if im going to drop anywhere from Fifteen Hundred to Two Grand an a guitar I would like it to be in a color I like.
Thats not too much to ask is it?
Problem is as we all know the clear coat covering a white body is going to yellow.
With a Nitro Finish sooner then later but even Poly isnt immune.
Now I know some are wild about the prospect of their ellegant White Fender turning Baby Poo Yellow the first time they have the audacity to play an outdoor gig.
Im not one of them.(call me crazy.)
To me it nothing makes a beautiful white guitar look like a 1997 Indonesian copy quicker.
I even have known folks who purposely leave their Oly White Fender exposed to the sun on a stand to QUICKEN the process.
Are their really that many folks who prefer that sickly yellow to Oly White?
I mean if I wanted to go three grand over my budget I gues I could go to the Custom Shop and have one made without the clear over coat but should one really have to go to that length to get a Fender in one of their most classic colors that will stay that color for more then a few months?
I was thinking they charge a little extra for a Sunburst finish how about an Oly White without the Clear Coat option?
Its kind of like the Sonic Blue....why not save the trouble and order Surf Green?
I bought my daughter a Daphne Blue Squier just two years ago and its already Surf Green....which is a pretty color....but so is Daphne Blue!
Anyway end of rant.
Any input?

My 4 year old Olympic White Jimmie Vaughn Strat hasn`t faded or yellowed the slightest bit since I bought it,in fact none of my late model Fenders have had any colour fading or changing issues.Do your guitars spend a lot of time outside or are there any smokers in your home? There are many factors that could cause reactions that affect the colours of the finishes. It's strange for a poly finish to fade as rapidly and as radically as you have experienced.

Yeah thats whats strange about my Daughters Strat.....it hasnt ever been exposed to outdoor sunlight and there are no smokers in the house.
I find it encouraging hearing about your guitars.
I was kind of eyeing an Oly White American Standard or the Oly white 65 American Vintage myself.
Ill probably end up with one of them regardless and hope for the best.
The Strat I have had for the last twelve years is a Black 50's Classic.....except as my number one it looks almost exactly like one of those Black Roadworns right down to the yellowing around the edges of the single ply guard.
Of course since I try to be careful with my instruments teh body finish is nowhere near as chewed up.
With Black though color transfer certainly wasnt an issue!

A 1998 and a 1999 Olympic Strat, and the 1999 has just a slight hint of coloration on the clear coat. I also have a 2009 Daphne Blue that looks like the day I bought it. I don't think it's much of an issue.

Hi Boelyn37: I completely get the desire to have a finish stay the colour you bought it.

So for starters, don't buy the Olympic White American Vintage model, because that is finished in nitrocellulose and will turn yellow the fastest. At least the Am Standard is urethane, which will resist yellowing much longer, especially if you store it away from daylight when not playing.

Alternatively, Arctic White will start out whiter than Oly White and so stay whiter longer. Although as far as I can see Arctic is currently only available in the MIM Std section of the catalog - though at least that means a polyester finish which may perhaps stay white the longest.

But still, I agree: for those of us that aren't into faded, yellowed finishes, white is a problem.

Cheers - C

My '99 MIM Olymp. Wht. Telecaster (Poly) has had only the slightest color shift in 15 yrs. (visible when I did the Tortoise guard install.

My 2012 Vintage Wht. (Tapioca?) Telebration Empress Telecaster is also Poly.

Image

Personally, I'm good with them both.

cheers!
