I was looking around at Fender's other brands and I noticed the Tacoma link leads to an empty website. It's just a picture of the forest with an ad for wood on it.

http://www.tacomaguitars.com/en-CA/

Where can a person go to find info on Tacoma Guitars?

My guess is the website is under construction.

Might want to register and ask your question here:

Thanks Bill but I don't think I want to join another forum and they seem to require membership just to lurk. It's a good idea, though. Thanks for pointing that out.

Yesterday I couldn't be bothered. Today I got curious, rolled up my sleeves and joined that forum.

Whoever runs it, it visibly is not Brad/Fender. Still, it seems fairly calm and sensible and a reasonably informed source for info on Tacomas. I have found no other such on the internet, so if you want to ask questions, it's there or nowhere, apparently.

I checked back through the last couple of years of threads (till I'd had my fill) and at least amongst those did not find any information or even speculation about FMIC restarting the Tacoma brand. The only discussion pertaining to that topic I came across was this:

http://www.tacomaguitarforum.com/index.php?topic=3808.0

I don't know if you can view that thread without joining their forum.

I'm not quite sure how genuinely informed the posters there are, but they seem to think Fender bought Tacoma to get their hands on its lumber growing/processing business (hence the "we're seasoning the wood" quip on that Tacoma place-holder website), and maybe factory tooling which was then used to make Guild guitars. Tacoma Guitars themselves subsequently turned out to be a marque which Fender felt need no longer exist - for reasons that are unclear.

Communications from FMIC to users of that forum boil down to "maybe we'll make Tacoma guitars again one day, maybe we won't. Watch this space."

Most of the rest of the Tacoma forum appears to consist of people complaining about how the finish has disintegrated on their instruments, but how they're still the BEST guitars ever made.

There. Now you don't need to join that forum if you don't want to. :)

Cheers, from your intrepid reporter - C

Thanks Ceri!
It was a gripping report!

So I guess what you're saying in a nutshell is .... if you want a Tacoma these days you'd better find a used one. Got it.

And watch out for "Tacoma rash", or "Tacomaitis" - that is, the lacquer majorly falling off the sealer coat beneath. About half that Tacoma forum seems to be devoted to this issue. From all the talk you could start wondering if there is a Tacoma guitar out there where the finish isn't disintegrating.

Some people on the Tacoma forum even think Tacoma's faulty finish process is why Fender closed them down. Which seems an amazingly unlikely theory to me, but there ya go...

Obviously, if you buy one we want to see pictures, please! :)

Cheers - C

Tacoma closed their Nashville facility back in 2011 and stopped repairing the bad finishes.

That Tacoma website has been like that for a few years, now. I recall looking at it a long time ago and it was like that. It looks like just another brand Fender bought up and killed off. Who knows if they will be revived or not?
