Hey everybody

Getting ready to buy a guitar for my 5 year old nephew, and wanted to ask what kind of first guitar you bought for yours or would suggest for the little one.

Thanks all

Mate brought his 8 year old a very very nice little kids/travel size Yamaha acoustic. It's very good, not overly expensive. And it's a Yamaha, almost guaranteed quality.

Five is pretty young for guitar. You might try a ukulele first to see if he stays interested. They're a perfect size for that age group and comparatively inexpensive. For guitars, you might look into a half size guitar. We used to sell "Amigo" brand half size and 3/4 size nylon strings at the shop and they were decent little things. For an electric guitar, the Squier Mini is a good choice. I have a 6 1/2 year old student with one and he can handle it fine.

Thanks guys
I was wondering if he's too young for the guitar, but he shows some interest, so I'll try.
I was thinking of a ukulele but then I'll have to get one too, to learn it and then teach him :)
Likely though it will be a travel/kids size, it's a good excuse to and try out a bunch of guitars :)

Kid fingers are a lot more sensitive than adult hands, and they don't build calluses the same way.
I recommend going with nylon to start with. But at least a shorter scale where there's less tension on the strings. And don't pick the thinnest strings, thinking it'll be easier. If there's one guitar memory I have from being a kid, it's how much the thin G string on a 12-string hurt.

Thanks Arth, that's what I was going with, but I might've been tempted to get a nice steel stringed. I have seen quite a few actually on amazon, but I'll get one from a store.
I remember when I switched from nylon to steel, hurt like hell
